ready for DSST Principles of Speech?
#1
I am going to take the DSST Principles of Speech tomorrow, but I wanted to ask how the Peterson's PT compared to the actual exam. I've gotten 58%, 70%, and 79% respectively. Are the Peterson's accurate to the actual exam? I've also given about 15 practice speeches and plan to do a few more today.
Thank you!

Sounds like you are good to go! When I took the Peterson's, I got a 71% and a 74% on the PT and ended up with a 67 on the real exam. You will be surprised at how easy the actual test is (at least the multiple-choice part). With PT scores like yours, I would stop working on the multiple-choice section and keep practicing speeches as much as you can. I'll be praying for your test tomorrow!! Smile

Yes, it is the actual recorded speech where I see candidates struggle/stress the most! Hopefully you are practicing under the 20-minute span of time you will be given during the speech section of this exam -- for preparation, practice (to determine if you are below the 3-minute minimum or above the 5-minute maximum), and then recording the actual speech. You are always able to "playback" your speech, but I never suggest doing this for more than a few seconds (peace of mind knowing that it actually recorded successfully) since you cannot make any changes anyway. Good luck!

Okay, I took my test this morning! I am so excited to be done!! It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I got a speech topic that I had practiced on previously (which was great!), and the multiple choice section was pretty easy. Now I have to wait 6-8 weeks to get my results...that will be the hardest part! Smile Praise the Lord for His grace! I'll post my comments on this test when I get my results.

If you did your exam on the computer, I have been hearing that candidates receive their score in about 2 weeks. So you may have a shorter wait than you think! Sounds like you had some great preparation.

Congrats! I know what a great feeling it is to have that over with. Wink Yep, BGSU_Alum_86 is right; it didn't take me that long to get my results back - only 18 days, actually (and yes, I was counting! hilarious ).

If it is only two weeks, that would be wonderful! And thank you to all for your suggestions and comments - they were wonderfully helpful!!

I also would just like to say to anyone who happens to read this and is considering taking this exam, that it really isn't as scary as it seems. As the saying goes, "Practice makes perfect," and I certainly found that to be true. My speech was no where close to perfect, but it was much better than when I started. By the time I took this exam, I had given about 20 speeches (to my computer Smile)...the first 10 or so I blundered through, but the more speeches I gave, they (SLOWLY) got better. I got used to getting my speech prepared in 10 minutes (3 points and write out introduction and conclusion), and coming up with something worthwhile to say on the fly. (Impromptu is not my strong point.) My greatest encouragement is to persevere, even when it seems like you aren't getting anywhere, because you can do it. Perseverance and prayer are what got me through this one!
