Citing Concern for Free Speech, 12 Federal Judges Say They Won’t Take Clerks from Yale Law School

"Students should be mindful that they will face diminished opportunities if they go to Yale," said a prominent circuit court judge, whose clerks have gone on to nab Supreme Court clerkships. "I have no confidence that they’re being taught anything."

So what's really going on is that conservative judges don't want the liberal students. Yale Law is the #1 law school in the nation so this would be the judge's loss not the students. There are plenty of judges out there they can clerk for.

This is a situation where I cannot help but laugh at the article, mostly from the ridiculousness of people being so naive but also so defensive.

I highly suspect that the person making the accusation has no idea what a trap house actually is. I went and looked him up, saw a video where he discusses the issue too... which only confirmed my feelings. Romanticizing slang can be dangerous by casualizing situations where people often need serious help and does disproportionately affect people in poverty who are often minority. By using slang like this casually, people may be confused or unaware about how serious a situation is and if assistance is needed. The email he sent out was definitely inappropriate. With that said, it appears Yale also over-stepped by pre-drafting the email apology for him.

I also agree with ss20ts that it feels like this is an issue of conservatives versus liberals.

The two names I saw, Elizabeth Branch and James Ho, were both appointed by Trump.  So who's surprised?

Here is likely the video you referring to.

If they're getting bent out of shape about the use of "trap house," I don't know what to tell them. It's just youth being youthful. Surely there are better uses of time and attention than for administration to run around trying to police vernacular.

The gentleman who sent the email is a minority. He's Native American.

Language evolves and the phrase used has a new meaning.

I completely realize he's minority. With that said, even within minority groups people will split on how the feel on the evolution of language. My friend and I had a similar discussion once because her kids use a lot of slang they have picked up through pop culture. They are one minority and had a close friend who was of another minority. I tried letting my friend know that her children might be unintentionally offending their friend. She did not want to listen. In the end, the friend stopped talking to them. When my friend reached out to the young man, he admitted that her children's slang made him feel awkward. So, it's my opinion to err on the side of caution because we never know how badly these things may affect others.
