online Web Development degrees
#1
Has anyone pursued a "web development" degree from an online college? There seems to be several schools that offer a generic GS or IT degree with a "web concentration". I've never heard of Franklin University, but they have an actual online Web Degree with only Algebra math requirement.

The WGU Software Engineering degree is similar: Software Engineering Bachelor's Degree Program Online | WGU
Franklin's degree seems to cover more aspects of ground-up web dev, although WGU would likely be far less expensive, and any gaps can easily be made up with Udemy, etc.

Franklin is a good school - and they accept 90cr of transfer, and all of those can be ACE credit - so Sophia, Study, CLEP, etc.

I guess you should probably start with budget. Nothing else matters until you say what you're willing to spend.

I think the average cost of a 4 year degree is $100k, so that would be my budget. I expect a typical online school would be cheaper than that.

For comparison, the budgets here are often less than $10k. To complete the WGU SWE degree, for example, nearly half the credits can be completed for less than $1000 in 2-6 months. The other half would be completed at WGU in 6-month terms for a flat rate around $4k. So one term would be approximately $5k (including transferred credits), two terms would be $9k, and five terms completing the minimum 12 CUs per term would be about $21k. The amount of time it takes is so variable because the courses are completely self-paced. It's possible to complete anywhere from 0 CUs in a term (less than the minimum, but students have done it) up to, in extreme cases, the entire ~120 CUs.

Ok, well, that's insane - and I think that includes living at the school, and living costs for most colleges are higher than the actual tuition.  You won't find anyone here advocating for that.

But if the sky is the limit, then just search for online web development degrees, pick the one you like the most, and start.

If you want to actually do this faster than the norm, and for less, then Franklin is a good choice. They're a state college in Ohio, and are respected the same as most state colleges.  If you can take most of your GE and Free Elective courses through Sophia (they have a partnership), then you can probably get through Franklin in a couple of years for $30k.  There are a lot of courses that won't transfer in, or haven't been evaluated yet - so you might be able to shave some of that off with a lab science at Sophia, or some computer courses at Study.com.

Hmm, everyone has their own 'cup' of tea and definitions for each... Eye of the beholder, I would say.  If I was in similar shoes, I would get a quick/simple Bachelors to get me in the door to the Masters, and that is where my focus would be at... a Masters in whatever field that interests me the most. If I wanted a 'mix/mash' of Entrepreneurship/Innovation (Business/IT mix)... an example is, this Silicon Valley Masters for $15K... https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...30-credits | My only suggestion is not get stuck at finishing the Associates, or Bachelors and getting ready for the Masters...
