need help revising BABA Mgmt Leadership degree plan
#1
Hello,

I have developed a degree plan (attached Excel spreadsheet) for the UMPI BABA Mgmt and Leadership concentration and I have also put the courses I think I would take from Sophia and UMPI. Since I have already paid for the 1 year membership at Sophia, I was trying to avoid other membership costs to SDC other than UMPI tuition. However, if I need to take some UL courses through SDC or another source I will. It is my understanding that Sophia generally transfers as only LL credits. However, see that it looks like one course BUS 350 Business Law will come into UMPI as a UL 3 credit hour class.

The courses I have completed so far from Youngstown State University:

Transfer credits from Youngstown State University

1.      ENGL 1550 Writing 1 3 cr
2.      PSYC 1550 General Psychology, 3 cr
3.      THTR 1500 History of Motion Pictures, 3 cr
4.      ASTR 1504 Descriptive Astronomy, 3 cr
5.      YSU 1500 Student Success Seminar, 1 cr
6.      ANTH 1500 Introduction to Anthropology, 3 cr
7.      CHMST 1545 Communication Foundations, 3 cr
8.      REL 2601 Introduction to World Religions, 3 cr
9.      GEOG 2630 Weather, 3 cr
10.  HIST 2605 Turning Points in US History 1, 3 cr (D grade will not transfer to UMPI)

General Education Sources from Sophia still needed:

1.      Communication at work, 3 cr
2.      Introduction to Ethics, 3 cr
3.      Introduction to Chemistry with Lab, 4 cr (started 1/10/23)
4.      US History 1, 3 cr
5.      Spanish 1, 3 cr
6.      US History 2, 3 cr (or can be any Sophia elective)
7.      Preparing for the Future of Work, 3 cr
8.      Conflict Resolution, 3 cr

General Education Requirements (Number/Letter is GEC requirement number)

1.      1B – ENG 105: English Composition 2, 3 cr
2.      2D – HUM 103 – Creative Decision Making, 3 cr
3.      3A/3B  – MAT 140 – Business Math, 3 cr
4.      4A – Online Orientation course (No credit or one credit)
5.      5D/5E – POS 101 American Government, 3 cr
Total: 12 credit hours

Business Administration Core Courses
1.      BUS 200 Intermediate Business Computing, 3 cr
2.      BUS 220 Managerial Accounting, 3 cr
3.      BUS 244 Management Information Systems, 3 cr
4.      BUS 325 Financial Management, 3 cr
5.      BUS 353 Legal & Ethical Environment of Business, 3 cr
6.      BUS 440 Business Analytics, 3 cr
7.      BUS 469 Strategic Professional Communication, 3 cr
Total: 21 credit hours

Management and Leadership Concentration
1.      BUS 240 Change Management, 3 cr
2.      BUS 260 Leadership, 3 cr
3.      BUS 321 Human Resources Management, 3 cr
4.      BUS 330 Marketing Management, 3 cr
5.      BUS 335  Organizational Behavior, 3 cr
6.      BUS 414 Operations Management, 3 cr
7.      BUS 489 Business Policy and Strategy, 3 cr
Total: 21 credit hours

Here is a summary of the credit breakdown:

General Education credit hours: 12
Business Administration credit hours: 21
Management and Leadership concentration: 21
YSU Transfer credit hours: 25
Sophia credit hours: 25
Total credit hours: 104 credit hours

UMPI Bachelor of Business Administration (Management and Leadership): 120 credits
120-104 = 16 credits deficit. Likely 5-6 remaining courses needed.

My main question: Do the credits need to be upper or lower level classes and what classes are recommended? Can they be from Sophia or do you recommend another source?

Sorry. I forgot to attach the UMPI BABA degree plan.

I don't see a biological science on your list. You must have a biological science AND a physical science. One of those needs to be a lab science. If you like Chemistry better than Biology, you can do the lab for chem, but you should still take Human Biology without lab. If you don't like Chemistry, you can drop it entirely and just do Human Biology with lab. You already have Astronomy for your physical science.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

@rachel83az

Does UMPI require me to take a Biology class no matter what or does Chemistry meet the Biological science requirement at UMPI? I know I had seen someone post that Sophia's Intro to Chemistry with Lab was now accepted as the Lab Science requirement by UMPI.

Previously, it was recommended that most people take the SDC BIO101L lab course. Since I have a 1 year Sophia membership, I wanted to try and avoid taking SDC classes if I could so I did not have to pay for the extra membership fee. I started taking Intro to Chem with the Lab and I am about 1/2 way through the class now. However, I liked Biology better than Chemistry in High School. Is the Human Biology course with Lab offered by Sophia. I believe this is the course that you are referring to and not a course on SDC? I just wanted to clarify. I think this is the course on Sophia you are referring to? Has it been verified for sure that UMPI will accept Human Biology with lab on Sophia to meet the Bio lab science requirement?

Sophia Human Biology: https://www.sophia.org/online-courses/sc...-biology-2

Although my tendency would be to finish the Intro to Chem and lab course I started, I do not want to still have to take yet another science (i.e. Biology course) if I do not have to do so?

Would you recommend that I drop the Sophia Intro to Chem course with Lab entirely and take the Human Biology course with Lab? It doesn't make sense to me to take the lab of one subject in Chemistry with the subject of another subject like Biology. For people that are not as good at Math like myself and the idea of doing the equation breakdowns on Chemistry is intimidating, would you recommend Human Biology as an easier choice? It seems like Human Biology is a combination of Anatomy and a Basic Biology class.

Sorry for all the questions, but, I want to make sure I take the most efficient path possible and avoid not having to take extra Math or Science classes and get through the rest of my GEC requirements as quickly as possible.

Thanks,

You need a Biology. You need a physical science. One of these must include a lab. Chemistry is a physical science. If you do Chemistry w/ lab at Sophia, you still need Human Biology (without lab). If you just do Human Biology w/ lab at Sophia, you don't need Chemistry because you have Astronomy. Human Biology will probably be easier for you, so I would say to drop Chem entirely and do Human Biology w/ lab and forget about the other sciences. Unless you need electives, then Environmental Science is also pretty easy. Not as easy as Human Biology, but you might still like despite it being a science. Alas, it has no lab.

You need two different science classes. A biological science and an environmental (or physical) science. If you take the chem with lab at Sophia, then you also have to take human biology (without lab, because you only need one lab science).
CLEP - 7 Courses, Study.com - 11 Courses, Sophia - 15 Courses, CSM Learn, INSTANTCERT - Spanish I, Coursera - Google Data Analytics Certificate.

Thanks for the clarification on Biology being a required class. I will advise my son to drop the Intro to Chem with lab class on Sophia and take the Human Biology class from Sophia for UMPI.
