is there any other tests for languages
#1
I know clep has spanish but is there any tests out there for college credit for other languages?
I think Berlitz does other languages but they are a little expensive for me.
Anyway any help would be great.
I started Swahili like 2 weeks ago on Rosetta stone and Im flying through it.
I started it because co-workers of mine talk it and i wanted to make sure they were talking crap. Big Grin
I still cant understand them or talk it but the pics part on Rosetta seems very easy. Im starting to sound it out pretty good still need some time to listen and understand what i hear.
If not im going t try for Tagalog or Italian.

You can try a Prior Learning Assessment at TESC after you enroll. Beginning and Intermediate Swahili both turn up in their database of PLA courses.

nj593, this is the list of CLEP language tests:

Foreign Languages
French Language (Levels 1 and 2)
German Language (Levels 1 and 2)
Spanish Language (Levels 1 and 2)

Depending on how high of a score you get is what determines if it is level 1 or 2, level 1 is 6 credits and up to 12 credits on level 2.

Not sure if this helps you at all.

1. The College Board offers several language options for credit, through CLEP and Advanced Placement.

The CLEP tests offer languages for credit.

Language options available:
French; German; Spanish

Details available here: CLEP: Exam Descriptions

There are multiple Advanced Placement exams for language credit. Some are also for the culture or literature of that particular language.

Language options available:
Chinese Language and Culture; French Language; French Literature; German Language; Italian Language and Culture; Japanese Language and Culture; Latin Literature; Latin: Vergil; Spanish Language; Spanish Literature

Details available here: AP Courses - Advanced Placement Course Descriptions

2. The ACTFL / LTI offers language testing for credit. Language options include:

Albanian;Amharic;Arabic;Armenian;Bengali;Bulgarian;Cantonese;Cebuano;Chavacan;;Chinese;Czech;Dari;Dutch;English;French;German;Haitian Creole;Hausa;Hebrew;Hindi;Hmong;Indonesian;Italian;Japanese;Javanese;Korean;Malay;Mandarin;Modern Greek;Mong;Pashto;Persian Farsi;Polish; Portuguese;Punjabi;Romanian;Russian;Serbian-Croatian;Slovak;Spanish;Swahili;Swedish;Tagalog;Thai;Turkish;Urdu;Vietnamese;Yoruba

Details available here: https://www.languagetesting.com/academic.cfm

The ACTFL is accredited by the American Council on Education, details here:

ACE | National Guide Online | Browse The Guide

3. New York University offers language proficiency exams, which are transcripted by NYU and "may be used by universities to grant academic credit or award advanced placement."

Language options available:

Afrikaans; Albanian; Arabic; Armenian; Bengali; Bosnian; Bulgarian; Cantonese;
Catalan; Chinese (listed as Cantonese or Mandarin); Croatian; Czech; Danish; Dutch; Finnish; French; German; Greek (Modern); Gujarati; Haitian Creole; Hebrew; Hindi; Hungarian; Ibo; Icelandic; Indonesian; Irish; Italian; Japanese; Korean; Latin; Lithuanian; Malay; Mandarin (traditional and simplified characters);Norwegian; Persian; Polish; Portuguese (Brazilian); Punjabi; Romanian; Russian; Serbian; Spanish; Swahili; Swedish; Tagalog; Thai; Turkish; Ukrainian; Urdu; Vietnamese; Yiddish; Yoruba

Details available here: Proficiency Testing - Foreign Languages | New York University - SCPS

4. Ohio University offers credit-by-exam language options. The exams are available as a sequence of six exams consisting of three exams at the elementary level, then three exams at the intermediate level. Each exam is 4 quarter hours, and they are in sequence and therefore not duplicative. As a result, this could in 24 quarter hours of credit per language, or about 16 semester hours per language.

Language options available:

French; German; Spanish

Details available here: Ohio University

5. There are other options for earning college credit, as well, through various other sources. Most colleges and universities offer language courses. Government and military training may include language courses available for credit, such as courses through the National Cryptologic School, the Foreign Service Institute, or the U.S. Dept of Agriculture Graduate School. Other organizations may offer language study for possible credit, such as Berlitz or Language Matters.

Details available here: ACE | National Guide Online | Browse The Guide

6. Some colleges and universities offer language proficiency exams that are exclusively for their respective enrolled students. While some schools may award credit for these, others may just use them for placement. When I attended Florida State University, I took a French placement exam there, and received 8 credits of French. That was in 2000; in 2003, Florida State University stopped offering credit for students who take the exam and now just uses its proficiency exams for placement. However, since the credits were on my Florida State University transcript, they were accepted for credit by Excelsior.

Thank you both. I think I've probably spent a little too much time researching this sort of thing in the past. Smile I hope it's helpful.

I had forgotten to mention Athabasca University as another option. Athabasca is a Canadian university that holds regional accreditation in the United States...which should make for a smooth transfer of credits to the Big Three. Most of their courses have the option to be taken as credit-by-exam instead of regular courses. However, even the credit-by-exam is rather expensive; it's often cheaper just to take the course elsewhere than to take the credit-by-exam from Athabasca...especially for those of us who are not Canadians, since the tuition is higher. Athabasca's language course options include introductory Cree, Spanish through the intermediate level, German through the intermediate level, and French all the way through the advanced level.

Thank you Creation Story! That was a lot of work to put together. I have mentioned it every chance I have gotten on the forum.

MaieJaie - I'll add your post, too, when the topic comes up again.

It is great to have so many credit options for languages!
