Excelsior Basic Genetics exam

3 lower level credit
Quote:General Description of the Examination

The Excelsior College Examination in Basic Genetics measures knowledge and understanding of material typically
taught in an undergraduate course in genetics for non-biology majors. The content of the examination corresponds
with course offerings such as Basic Genetics or Introduction to Heredity. The examination assumes a familiarity
with introductory biology, general chemistry, and algebra.

The examination tests for the basic concepts and terminology of transmission, molecular, and population genetics
and the ability to apply this knowledge to solving problems in genetics and to understand the societal implications
of genetic technologies.

Learning Outcomes:

After you have successfully worked your way through the recommended study materials, you should be able to
demonstrate the following learning outcomes:
1. Explain the details of Mendelian genetics, its extensions and modifications.
2. Explain the central dogma of molecular genetics, gene regulation, and protein structure/function.
3. Compare/contrast the role of nature vs. nurture in the development of complex traits.
4. Demonstrate critical understanding of scientific method and skills in problem solving and quantitative
analysis.
5. Discuss genetic technologies and their implications to human health, social, and environmental issues.
coursea is offering a free course that starts in 10 days
Excelsior recommends the coursea course as a resource for the exam

I have already registered for the coursea course

hope to take the exam in mid-late March

thought I'd pass on the coursea info

Thanks for passing on the info. I'm interested in the Genetics test, but I think I'll go with Saylor due to the completely self-paced nature of its courses.

Does TESC accept the Saylor courses?
#4
they accept the ece exams and you use the saylor courses to pep for them

but the saylor courses are just self study with no exam, no papers

Yes and no. Saylor now has three courses that are NCCRS-approved, but they are not science or mathematics. The Saylor course for Microbiology can be transcribed by Straighterline as an ACE-approved course as long as you pay Straighterline's subscription fee and take the $25 proctored exam. All of the other Saylor courses are just good for studying for ECEs, CLEPs, etc.
