Who to email about trans

Hey everyone,

My wife is looking at getting her Fundamental Payroll Cert (FCP) and
it's listed as 8 credits on the ACE database.

It looks like:

In the lower-division baccalaureate/associate degree category
- 3 semester hours in payroll accounting
- 1 semester hour in taxation
- 1 semester hour in principles of accounting
- 1 semester hour in business law
- 1 semester hour in information systems
- 1 semester hour in business mathematics.
NOTE: for a total of 8 semester hours. (6/11).

I was just wondering who to contact at TESC in order to validate this?
I know TESC is *supposed* to take anything ACE recommends, but
she'd like to verify it before choosing a gameplan for the rest of her
CLEP/DANTES work.

Thanks ladies and gents!

*ps - excuse the screwed up title, somehow I chopped it...

I don't see it listed on the TESC list (which is handy for many licenses/certs):
Thomas Edison State College: Licenses & Certifications

So what happens is it will be accepted on a case-by-case basis. They will accept any ACE credit that you give them, but only the school can tell you what it will be worth. The one exception I've found is they wouldn't award me a few credits I had because ACE called them vocational level. Here is the recommendation from ACE (click on "Fundamental Payroll Certification Exam"):
ACE CREDIT | The National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training

I'd expect that TESC will give you all of the credits since they are listed as lower level credits and not vocational. But whether the credits are random courses in each department or something more useful will depend on how they want to handle it. Since those are all single credit recommendations (expect for one) you might have a mix of credits but since they are not three credits they might not fulfill the requirements. In this case it is important to speak with TESC about it. As for who to talk to you'd want to talk with an advisor in your wife's degree area by making an appointment (and being an enrolled student). You could also submit it and discuss it further with them down the road if it doesn't turn out to be what you had hoped. If your wife isn't enrolled then you might not be able to get an answer, my advice is to call and ask them to look up the specific certification. They have a database that they use to tell them what to give for credit on anything that was awarded in the past (so you tell them the source and they might have it already in their system).
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

Thanks for the great reply, you answered my questions and then some. I wasn't
sure how it worked (my TESC degree was plug and play, never had to deal with certs
or the like).

We'll just have to do as you say and give them a call early next week. Thanks again!

Just to prepare you, you won't get an answer that specific without being enrolled.

It's true that TESC doesn't always follow ACE point by point (another case is with ALEKS beginning algebra, which many here complete for credit but TESC does not award). However, a few things you can do to determine your wife's best possible results.

1. Does she have a document or proof that she completed the course? If so, she should open an ACE account (free) and get the credit verified. This is the first step no matter what.

2. If the degree she seeks is business, she's likely going to get full utilization. If she seeks a liberal arts degree, best case scenario is that these will fall 6 free elective and 2 general education. Less than ideal, but still fine, is that all 8 would be free electives.

3. Free electives at TESC -literally- can be earned for $0, so if she's looking for a liberal arts degree, these credits should not weigh heavily into her equation. 8 FEMA free elective credits can be earned in a weekend, making them easy to replace. If her degree is in business, these are much more valuable, and while 8 credits isn't a deal breaker- it can be a heart breaker.

4. Pay $75 and apply to the program, they'll do an unofficial evaluation in that process. At that point, TESC will talk to you about all credits submitted for evaluation. When she applies, she'll have 6 months before that fee expires and she'd have to reapply. Not a huge deal, and it gets REAL answers from the source.
