NYU foreign language proficiency exam
#1
Hello everybody!

I would like to find out more information from the people that took NYU foreign language proficiency exam ( for 12 points). The questions are:

1) Is the test done on computer or is it in paper and pen format?

2) In case the test is in paper and pen format the writing of a short essay needs to be done in cursive or printed manner?

Thanks in advance!

I was curious about this, but never investigated too far. As you can imagine, when writing in Japanese, it makes a huge difference if you have to write by hand rather than computer.

By the way, Leebo, did you schedule FLAT already? I would like to take it instead of NYU test, but TESC clearly told me today that they will not take it. If NYU test requires cursive writing, I would not be happy about it at all. I hoped somebody can comment on NYU test, there is not much info about it on their site.

Not yet, I'm in the process of getting the proctor information that I need to submit to BYU.

It's a shame that TESC doesn't take the FLATs.

This is the answer I got from NYU. Maybe information will be helpful for somebody in the future.

"This is a handwritten exam. You will be expected to write your answers in the test booklet, in print. And we have no sample materials for the essay topics due to general nature of the exam.
The 12pt exam will have a short essay which needs to be written with a minimum of 150 words. The topics will be extremely simplified, it will focus on general everyday activities and subjects anyone can relate to.
The 16pt exam will have a more complex subject. You will not need any specialized knowledge for these topics but you are expected to be able to take a stance in your writing and argue your opinion on the subject matter. This must all be done in your language. "

Well, sounds like printing is what you wanted. I'm not sure what considerations there are in your chosen language with that regard.

Yes, their reply made me happy since I wanted to avoid cursive writing. I am planning to take Ukrainian and Russian test.
