Where do I start?

Do I simply go through each set of flash cards and print them one by one and study from there? There has to be a more paper friendly way. lol

How do you prepare. I am feeling overwhelmed. DO I just keep doing the flash cards over and over on line, do I need to print, do I need to read somehwere 1st?

Sorry for all of the questions. I am new and have never taken these test, I am working on my BS in Business Mang. and have 60 credits. I desire to test out and earn 21 credits here and my remaining 40 with my University.

You can begin by relaxing and not feeling overwhelmed; there are many people here that can and will help you out should you get lost and right now you're still on track!

There is no need of course to print the flashcards, just review them online as often as possible and of course try to remember and recall as much as you can each time (see the 4 R's below). Your increased learning will grow over time as will your confidence and test taking skills.

What exam are you starting out on?

Just curious as to what school you are currently enrolled with and what their policy is on any minimum exams scores?

I go to Indiana Wesleyan on line.

I too was in your same shoes a mere 10 months ago, so I can appreciate how overwhelming this new experience can be. However, it is a proven way to knock credits out at a much faster rate than sitting in a classroom.

I can not speak for the entire forum, as everyone has to find their personal way of studying, but for me, the following works:

1. I never print out the questions; I do all my studying online. I know of people who do, but I am fortunate enough to have DSL and unlimited minutes on the net.

2. I always start at section one. I go through the questions and do not bother to guess the right or wrong answer; I just read the questions then click on the answer and read the answer.

3. I then go back to question one and start all over again...this time trying to answer the questions based on what I just read. I do not type in the answer: for one, I am not a good typist and get upset when it tells me I'm wrong just because I mistyped the answer, and two, it takes too long. At this point, you will miss many so don't get wrapped around the axel about it.

4. I do the above step again. By now I should be getting most of them right. If not, I write down the question number of the ones I missed and review them at the end until I understand the question and answer quite well.

5. I do step 3 again, this time I should not miss any.

6. I go back to the main menu and use the scramble function. This will really test if you are memorizing the order of the questions/answers, or really know the answer.

7. After I can go through and answer all the questions 100% right in the scrambled mode, I start on the next section.

8. After I complete more than one section, I go back to the previous section and run through them in the scrambled mode again...ie...If I am at the end of say, section 4, I will do sections 1 through 3 again. Yes, this is very repetitive, but it works for me. At the end of the last section for the subject you are studying, you will have the subject down pat.

9. MOST IMPORTANT!! The answer in the blank is irrelevant. You must know the answer to the question and WHY that answer is the correct one. Knowing the COMPLETE question and answer is paramount. Concentrate on the answer AND explanation equally.

Basket Weaver is SO right about his last tip. I know that when some people start out using the flashcards, they think if they memorize what goes in all of the blanks, that they will be ready for the exam. So follow Basket Weaver's instructions, and you'll be "good to go".

And welcome to the forum! As you can see, we are all glad to lend a helping hand because we have "been there, done that"! So take a deep breath, try not to stress out, and give yourself plenty of time to study for each exam. You're going to do great!

Why is the simplest thing sometimes so hard to see?!

I have been typing answers and actually getting sore wrist/pinky finger from reaching for the "enter" key so often in succession. Somebody suggested just answer them without typing and then read the answer. DUH! Why didn't I think of that?! hilarious

I scheduled my History I CLEP for June 8. So I'd better get studying...

Found out Missouri State accepts DANTES tests, too, but only allow 25% of your credit to be by exam. Thinking about DANTES Humanities next.

Hi Ann,

First and foremost the best thing about taking any exam, be it CLEP or any other is YOU decide when its time to take the test. If you do not feel ready do not sign up to take the test. I took and passed the CLEP U.S. History I and II exams with one (heavy) week of studying. (About 3 hours a day)

I then took TWO MONTHS of semi-heavy studying (about 8 hours per week) for the CLEP Humanities exam. It paid off because I passed with a 51!

That was close, but it still counts and I received SIX hours towards my degree for my efforts. This being one of my weakest subjects required me to really work at learning the material as opposed to just memorizing it. Also, in regards to the CLEP humanities, IC is a great resource, but you should also find another source to study due to the subject matter being so broad.

So relax, and enjoy the experience. And when you find that you are sick of studying and certain subject, you are most likely ready to take the exam! Good luck.
