Wasn't the issue with ITT Tech that they no longer qualified for financial aid?

Ah, yes, you're right.  I couldn't quite remember what happened.

Speaking of, if you become unaccredited, do you lose the ability to get student loans?  So that might cause a school to go out of business.

Yes.  Well, federally, anyway.  Federal student aid can't be used at an unaccredited school.  I'm hoping the school I'm planning to get my master's from finishes the process before I'm to the point that I'm ready to enroll.

I was wondering about the converse of what I said too. If you were one of the previous CLU grads, graduating when they were NA, and then it becomes RA, I think you get some benefit. I think employers would think CLU is RA, so your degree must be RA, especially when years pass.

No, Sanantone is correct. The status on the day of your graduation is the only thing that matters.

In my sig you'll see my first degree - from CIA in 1990. At the time, they were NA. Later, they became RA, but my degree is absolutely considered NA.

Accreditation dates and expiration/renewals are public info- easy to look up. https://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/

Also, getting RA takes YEARS of compliance before a school is ever reviewed. It's unlikely that all this is going to just pop up and surprise anyone.

Very interesting --- but not the CIA in Langley VA, right? Always thought a CIA degree would be cool - a Bachelor of Counterintelligence, Master of Black Ops etc... Smile

Years ago I had a classmate in HS mention that he wanted to go to this school....found it interesting back then that they had the same initials as a three letter agency.

The accreditation status of one's degree is that of the school's at the time the degree was conferred.

However, as a practical matter, degrees from unaccredited schools that subsequently become accredited are often treated as if they came from accredited schools.

If your degree comes from a school that subsequently lost its accreditation, you technically graduated with a degree from an accredited school, yet a background check might not reveal that.

The good news: so many employers don't know, don't care, and don't check. That's why we have a billion-dollar diploma mill industry.

My great-uncle tells us that my grandfather worked for the CIA. After he died, I sent a letter inquiring about anything declassified he might have worked on. (According to the Freedom of Information Act, I should have access to anything that isn't still classified.) I'm not even kidding, the letter they sent in reply said, "We can neither confirm nor deny..." and referenced my grandfather's involvement.
