Most HBCUs are adapting successfully. Occasionally a new institution that's a predominantly Black college even pops up, typically a small religious school associated with a predominantly Black church.
Another phenomenon that suggests HBCUs are not dying in general is that numerous other minority serving institutions, such as tribal colleges and heavily Hispanic serving institutions, are doing well and are often emphasizing their minority serving attributes.

Update: On October 21, 2024, announced by this public disclosure issued November 15, 2024, the Accreditation Commission of TRACS voted to maintain (i.e. to continue) Virginia University of Lynchburg's status as accredited on probation.
There is good news for VUL:
TRACS Wrote:With submission of the June 30, 2023, audit by VUL, the Commission determined that VUL now demonstrates compliance with TRACS Standard 11.2 (Financial Operations), and that Standard is no longer a factor for determining a Sanction.
However, VUL still needs to demonstrate to TRACS that it complies with TRACS standards related to federal financial aid participation, including that VUL "Provide a plan for operations through a restricted cash flow environment and document available reserves to carry out this plan."

"Last Accreditation Review
Reaffirmation II granted in April 2021.
The institution's Probation status was reviewed in October 2024. The TRACS Accreditation Commission voted to maintain the institution on Probation for failure to demonstrate compliance with the following Standard: 17.12 (Title IV Participation). This status will be reviewed by the Accreditation Commission at the April 2025 Commission meeting."
Apparently, the US Department of Education administers the programs authorized by the Higher Education Act. It will be interesting to see how the potential dissolution of the US Department of Education impacts all these regulations.

Wonderful! VUL enters its 20th year of TRACS accreditation.
A nice follow-up post on DI to Jonathan Whatley. That forum is a little too aggressive for my taste, but I'm glad to see they got the news. Keep up the good work, Degreeforum moderators and participants!

People need to STOP reporting misinformation! This is NOT accurate!
1. TRACS has NOT changed VUL's status from Probation. [as of the Oct 2024] TRACS meeting.
2. VUL is STILL on Probation until TRACS meets again in APRIL 2025. VUL has until March 2025 to submit the correct documents, to satisfy TRACS' request for the April 2025 Meeting.
3. NONE of the links shared mention ANYTHING about a change in status!

Sure it does! It can't get any simpler than this: "Accreditation Reaffirmed: Probation Removed 01/24/2025
Has satisfactorily addressed all compliance concerns from previous actions" The first link goes directly to the US Dept of Education and you need to click on the + for the remarks I directly quoted. Take a chill pill and rejoice!

If you go to the TRACS website, they removed the probation remarks on the member institution link and replaced it with, "Institution has demonstrated compliance with all TRACS standards. No follow-up reporting required." That is pretty convincing to me and the US Department of Education! Additionally, the school's website does not mention it is on probation anymore.
