Basically what the title says. I'm a US citizen from the day I was born who speaks native level English. I wanted to know if anyone else has done this before and if it works, would the credits count as free electives or humanities? I plan on going to UMPI online for one of their BLS degrees.

What native language are you looking to test? UMPI does not grant credit for taking an ACTFL LTI for English, but I know several people that have received ACE credit (lower level or lower level plus upper level for higher level of achievement) for the test in different languages, with Spanish being the most common, but others being French and German also being accepted by UMPI. German came in as GEL 1XX for lower level and GEL 3XX for upper level, but was honored for the language requirements & upper level where applicable by UMPI.

I've heard that testing English through ACTFL LTI can count towards general electives, with my degree requiring 62 and after I want to test for Japanese through ACTFL LTI as well because it is really hard on me to take a break from Japanese to learn enough of I language I won't have any long-term use for. Any foreign language can country towards my Gen Ed credits at UMPI right?

English is not a foreign language at UMPI. English classes are required of all students but they are not anything like taking Spanish 101. You don't actually learn in English in English courses unlike classes in Spanish or other languages. I just looked at the transfer database from UMPI and they have never given credit for the English ACTFL exams. No credit of any kind. They have given credit for Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, French, German, and Arabic.

Thank you for looking into this. I didn't know if English would count as just electives, but I know they wouldn't count towards foreign language. If Korean is accepted for foreign language hopefully Japanese will too.

If you score high enough they most likely will accept Japanese. It's not in the database most likely because no one has transferred it in the past. I know several people who've taken the English exam and did not receive credit.

Thank you very much. Due to UMPI's generous credit acceptance practices I didn't know if they'll throw something somewhere as long as it's ACE credits.

Welcome to the board, please provide more details, it may be best for you to fill in the addendum and template to illustrate an overall picture of your scenario. ACTFL is a great option to rack up alternative credits for the electives of many degrees from TESU/UMPI, etc. If you know more than one language, you can use those credits towards some general education and elective requirements, affordable and quick...
