Like every other CLEP exam you need a 50/80 scaled score to pass.
The essays represent 50% of the exam.
You will receive 50 multiple choice questions in 50 minutes, open ended essay prompt for 30 minutes, and a 40 minute essay requiring citation and reference back to two sources provided. Full information of scoring and example essays are available in the CLEP Official Study Guide or for $10 on the Collegeboard site.
College Composition | CLEP will show you some of the content of the exam.
Good Luck.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

You'll have to take whichever one you're school takes (some require one over the other). I found my score was lower than I expected. I was sure I aced the essays so maybe those 50 questions are what got me. They don't itemize out the score so I can't tell you which part of the test is harder. I took a four credit English Composition course at my CC and got an A, took business writing (another A), and then tested out of Technical Writing (DSST). I'd say it may not be the test for you if you're not confident in your essay writing.
