University of the People Experiences

My instructor mentor said I am not to:
* Dock points for plagiarism.
* Dock points for blatant chatgpt [Insert Name Here].

I got in trouble for not responding 3 times. My mentor requires a response Monday, Wednesday, Friday to students. But, all my students posted on Thursday/Friday. But, because I didn't post on Monday & Wednesday to "respond" to students it doesn't count.

I am to coach all students on AI use and plagiarism when found. About 35 of my 42 students are doing this. This is a lot to communicate to back/forth and of course its denied. Even when I show them their coursehero or studocu document they copied/pasted directly.

The peer reviews are bad. Half the students are going through and marking every discussion board as 0. So now I have to go and "adjust" everything.

My mentor is bitching at me every day with 4-5 emails that are 10-15 paragraphs long with a fake degreemill PhD for not "doing enough".

I was told by my mentor I should put student papers into ChatGPT and let it grade so I can be faster.

Apparently, me, actually highlighting, leaving actual comments, and real feedback on essays, etc, is not acceptable to this university. The mentor suggested I copy/paste responses for similar work and not cater to individuals.

No wonder most grad schools don't take this degree anymore.

This school is a mess. A huge mess.

I guess the rumors are true. The forums are made with ChatGPT and responded to by ChatGPT. Instructors grade with ChatGPT.

The peer review grades are likely given without many people actually reading the papers, resulting in mostly A's.

As a first adjunct job, the University of the People could still be a good stepping stone if you want to make a career out of this. However, since most universities only allow you to teach 1-2 classes per term, it seems you need to stack multiple adjunct jobs at different universities to make a living.

Keep your head up.

I think that I have mentioned this in this forum.

At a course for teachers at a private university in Peru called "ChatGPT in education" or similar, they said to give the texts to ChatGPT and ask it to generate questions, then ask ChatGPT to create the rubric, and later give the answers by the students and the rubric to ChatGPT, and make it grade them.

The use of ChatGPT to write essays is a widespread problem across higher education. How a school responds says a lot about their dedication to providing a quality education and only awarding credentials to students who've earned them. An instructor should be allowed to fail a student who uses ChatGPT to do all their work, especially if that student can't cite real sources. AI is great for providing assistance, but there's no point in going to college if you're not going to use your brain. Plus, AI is not always correct.

In pursuit of expanding my professional horizons and exploring potential opportunities for adjunct teaching positions, I recently completed the application process with the University of the People. The teaching adventure officially begins this week with the start of my first led course. I initially applied early on in my VUL journey, noting my expected graduation date, but then more or less forgot about it. As that date approached, the university reached out to follow up, asking for my transcripts for review and to be considered for selection for Term 2.

If there is value, I’ll share any updates as things progress.
