University of Phoenix - Associates (AXIA)
#1
Hi,

I had some time off (laid off) this past summer I took courses at a local college, online courses and CLEP and was able to earn 30 credits, in about 4 months.

I just signed up at University of Phoenix (UOP) for the Associates of Arts in Technology\Database Development.

It was difficult decision because I am already banking credits with TESC and was hoping to complete my degree trought TESC. However, I need an Associates at the very least to backup my experience (17 years in IT, currently Director of a department). I need anything to back me up ASAP. This program goes in line with what my strength (reporting) and TESC doesn't have an associates in this particular subject.

I chose UOP because, I am working fulltime again and have 3 children. After joining the work force once more, it has been impossible for me to juggle work, kids, home, school. With TESC I have not been able to get anyone from TESC to truly explain anything to me (for example where do I take the classes I need to complete the degree? When I tried to register for classes with TESC my classes were not listed there.) I also realized that it will take me much longer to study for a CLEP now because I don't have the time to focus on self study, than it would be to take two classes simultaneously at UOP.

My question is this... When I initially signed up with UOP my original advisor told me UOP accepts ACE credits. However he resigned and now I have a new advisor who tells me they don't accept ACE what they do is prior learning assessments.

Has anyone had experience with UOP as far as learning assessments or transferring ACE credits?

Not to totally go off on a tangent here, but isn't UoP expensive? Like Very Expensive? Like $530 per credit expensive for undergrad?

As far as taking the classes you needed for TESC's program when they didn't offer the class itself, you could have done cleps, dssts, taken classes from community colleges, Penn Foster (as long as they're ace recommended), Excelsior (which are a jump in expense credit per hour-wise, but still an option) and programs like Brigham Young, and several others. Just have to poke around for a bit.

But back to your question, it looks like (from all the reference material I've found in searching on the web) that UoP enters into partnership with certain organizations who happen to have ACE approved programs, and can bring the credits over like that. I can't find anything that says that they'll bring ACE approved credits in, unless they're coming in from a particular school. You may be able to use a credit bank through EC or TESC to get the ace credits into UoP though.

I'm curious though. You say that you can take 2 classes simultaniously at UoP, but can't focus on self-study for CLEPs during that same time if you weren't at UoP. Is there just the obligation to complete factor? Or that you're being told exactly what you need to be doing to pass a class? Like I said, I'm just curious.

Good luck with your degree!
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Wile E. Coyote, genius. I am not selling anything nor am I working my way through college, so let's get down to basics: you are a rabbit and I am going to eat you for supper. Now don't try to get away, I am more muscular, more cunning, faster and larger than you are, and I am a genius, while you could hardly pass the entrance examinations to kindergarten, so I'll give you the customary two minutes to say your prayers.

Bachelor of Science in PsychoRabbitology degree
Master of Education with a specialty in Rabbit-specific destructive munitions (or eLearning & Technology, I forget which)
Doctor of Philosophy in Wile E. Leadership with an area of specialty in Acme Mind Expansion - 2017 Hopefully
