Uexcel College Writing 2014
#1
Okay, In the study guide from excelsior it said that one should be familiar with MLA format of writing. I looked through it in Diana Hacker's "A Writer's Reference". Basically, I was really familiar with everything. Its basic grammar that I was really familiar with (and you are probably also). The only thing that was new to me was how to cite. I just wrote down one way of citing and thats that. On the actual exam there was 2 essays exactly as it said in the study guide. I just found myself pretty tight for time though. The second essay took me much faster. I got a B. My advice to anyone out there considering this exam is to just study the following form of citing: (assuming you know basic english...)
1-Signal phrase e.g. As stated by Smith
2-open quotes " "
3-page number in parentheses (page 1)
If the article is just one page I wrote page 1. I dont know if thats correct but.....
All in all the citation should look like this: As stated by Smith "There are very many different forms of illness" (page 1).
They might ask for an index of the list of the works cited.
1-It has to be in the order of the Alphabet.
2-This is how it should look: Last name, first name. "name of article/periodical". Book or newspaper (year): page-page
There are other rules about when citing a web page, movie etc. I stuck to citing that which I knew the rules about (the above) and I didnt run into any problem.
Hope this helps!
Good luck with all your exams!

I did mine so that I didn't have to cite anything and got an A.
