UMPI Psy Degree Help

Hi Everyone,
 
New to the forum, another member sent me here for advice so I appreciate any insight!
 
It's been awhile since I've looked at anything college related as I attempted a degree in 2014-2015. It was going great until I ran into some health issues and caused me to drop classes with failed grades. I tried school again but the health issues resurfaced unfortunately and I just didn't have the heart to try a third time. 
 
Health is much better over the years and my husband has been encouraging me to give it another shot! I've been looking at the various threads and posts and think Pierpont and then UMPI might be a good choice for me? Husband thinks Pierpont AAS in Information Systems might be a good back up in case I switch gears to tech or project management.
 
I'm looking to confirm this plan and get some guidance on how to handle the failed grades or if I should be concerned at all? Ultimately, I want a Bachelor's degree to become a licensed therapist while keeping the door open for Psy D in the future.

@Priszilla, Welcome to the board, great template but you've missed the more important addendum as it has more information to provide a better overview of your situation. I suggest filling that part out and appending it to your original post. Another thing to look out for is the UMPI BA Psych has an internship or practicum portion that some may not be able to complete, you may want to add TESU BA Psych as an alternative option. Do you really need a Psych degree or does any degree work for you? Example pathway that may suit you more: Pierpont BOG AAS> UMPI BAS/BLS with a minor in Psych> MS Psych> PHI CHI Society membership

Sorry I missed that! It wouldn't let me edit but I just replied with the addendum info. I will look into TESU BA Psych. I would prefer a psych degree, have other members given good feedback doing the track you mentioned as it being a minor instead? I'm open to any paths that make sense. I just thought the extra Psych classes at UMPI would help with bringing up my GPA from those failed grades.

Ok! Thanks so much for the info. This all makes sense and gives me a better sense of what needs to be considered.

3 classes with unfavorable grades (F) will not make too much of a difference, especially since you will be doing 'easier' UMPI BAS/BLS classes that will get you better grades overall. The only way to 'fix' those previous grades are to retake the classes, unless you have the energy/money/time to do that, I would skip it. People make up for that by doing what they can for future classes... Furthermore, you can try getting even better grades when you're at the Masters level, it'll offset that completely.

Maybe I'm overlooking something, but...

The UMPI Transfer Credits Page:

My interpretation: When transferring credits from another institution, the grades for these courses will be recorded on your transcript, but they will not be calculated into your cumulative GPA at UMPI. Your GPA at UMPI will only reflect the courses that you take there.

Darknigh7 is correct, when you take a class elsewhere, it doesn't affect the class you took at the previous institution. It doesn't matter if the class is the same one or transfers as the same thing, the GPA you have at one school doesn't get affected at another school. UMPI will use that for their external GPA, you'll have an internal GPA entirely from UMPI 30 credits for residency.

as ss20ts and I mentioned, the only way to get a better GPA from that previous institution is to retake the class, if you've taken those within the last 2-3 years, you decide to take it or not depending on your energy/money/time... anything over 5 or more years, I would forget it and concentrate on the greater goal of finishing the bachelors and moving to the masters.

Edit to Add: Some institutions have an academic forgiveness policy, ask them if they do or not, you can see if they can forgive your grades in 5 years. Problem is that the transcripts would still indicate so, but it would not be affecting your GPA, which is the main reason you want to ask and sort out...
