UMPI Gen Ed Requirements?
#1
I am working on Sophia courses so I can eventually apply to UMPI for a BABA with Management & Leadership concentration.  Wish I could apply for the August term, but don't think I'll be ready.
I still have 6 Sophia courses to do, Biology with lab to do through SDC, American Govt through Instant Cert, and I have to CLEP out of Spanish.

I have a few questions:

  1. I am taking US History I and Art History I at Sophia.
Does UMPI require US History II and Art History II (like they do Micro and Macroeconomics) to meet their Gen Ed requirements?  I would rather take business classes if the II's are just going to come in as electives.

  2. Also, Math is not my strong subject.  Do I have to take College Algebra and Intro to Statistics through Sophia, or can I just take math at UMPI?

  3. I took Accounting Principles at community college in 1991 and got a C.  I'm thinking about taking Accounting on Sophia in case UMPI doesn't accept my old cc credit.  If they accept one, the other just goes toward electives, correct?  Or does UMPI sometimes refuse to accept old community college credit?
Thank you very much.

1. You don't need US History II or Art History II.

2. If math isn't your strong subject, I'd say to do it at Sophia instead of UMPI. Sophia's is relatively easy and painless. UMPI might not be as painless. You will need both Algebra (Sophia) and Math for Business (UMPI) for a BABA.

3. If UMPI brings them in under the same course number and name, that would only be 3 credits total, none in electives. I haven't heard of them having issues with old CC credit, though.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

American Government is no longer offered from InstantCert. You can take this class at UMPI and finish it in 3 days with an easy A.

You only need 1 US history and 1 art history course for the GEC. If you take the second one then they will go towards your general electives.

I would take the Math for Business class at UMPI. That's what you'll need for the BABA.

UMPI will accept a class with a C for the grade. What college did you take the Accounting Principles course from? It may or may not transfer as Financial Accounting which is what you need for the UMPI degree. Sophia's course will transfer in for Financial Accounting.

The Math for Business is a fun class with decent scenarios in the quizzes and final assessment. I really enjoy math; however, with a proper level of common sense, you will be able to navigate the class with decent success.

Thank you Rachel83az and ss20ts!
I didn't know American Gov't was no longer available.  Thanks for the heads up.
I took ACC111 Accounting Principles 1 at Mesa Community College in AZ in 1991.
I understand now that I'll need both Algebra from Sophia and Math for Business from UMPI.  Will I need Statistics from Sophia, too?

Thank you so much.  I did very well in high school Algebra (back when dinos roamed the earth).  Then I tried College Algebra at my community college last year and had to drop (it moved so fast), so now I am completely intimidated by math.  I am looking forward to giving Algebra and Math a go once again.

I know what most people say about CLEP here but I have never had any very serious problems with the proctoring server and the American Government course was pretty easy.

Bonus! if you use Modern States they will give you a voucher to pay for the collegeboard course and reimburse the proctoring fee.

Thank you AcethroughCollege.
Yes.  I'm taking the Modern States Spanish class right now so it will pay for CLEP.
I hadn't heard about problems with CLEP proctoring.  Is that happening to people who take CLEP and are proctored at home?  My local community college offers the CLEP tests.  Maybe I'll just take them there.  Thanks again.

Just an FYI, College Algebra is not equivalent to high school Algebra - it's basically HS Algebra I & II, with a little Precalc for good measure.  So if you took a full year to do Algebra I, then another year for Algebra II, College Algebra is going to 4x faster than you previously learned the material; and if you didn't take Precalc, then you have more to learn as well.  So if you struggle a bit, don't feel bad - you can totally do it.

Great explanation.  Dropping the Algebra class at my CC led to my search for an alternative way to earn credit for that class, which led me to this site and all of you ... and that completely changed ALL of my college plans ... for the better!  Funny how things work out, eh?  Big Grin
