UMPI Degree Help - Bachelor of Applied Science
#1
Hi everyone,
I'm currently a student in the Bachelor of Political Science program at UMPI and am considering switching majors. While I appreciate the program, I'm hoping to pursue a field with less emphasis on writing essays and align more with my skills and interests.
Background:
  • I have completed a significant number of computer science courses.

  • I hold certifications in:
    • Meta Professional Certificate in Digital Marketing
    • Google Digital Marketing and Commerce
    • Various marketing-related certifications from LinkedIn and Coursera
  • My UMPI evaluation indicates I need 24 classes to graduate.
  • I'm awaiting credit evaluation for the Google Ecommerce and Marketing course I recently completed.
[*]Questions:

  1. Which majors within UMPI offer minimal essay writing requirements? My strengths lie in analysis, problem-solving, and communication through other mediums.

  2. What is the process for switching majors at UMPI? What steps should I take to ensure a smooth transition? can i have a bachelor's in political science and digital marketing at the same time ?

  3. Which majors, considering my computer science and marketing background, could utilize the most credits from my current coursework? I'm eager to minimize credit loss and expedite my graduation timeline.

[*]Thank you in advance for your insights and guidance! I look forward to your responses and any advice you can offer.

Most of POS courses are actually less writing than the business courses. To change majors, you just email your academic success coach and tell them what you want to change. I don't think you're going to find the MIS or marketing courses to be less writing or less work. UMPI doesn't has a CS degree in YourPace. There's the MIS minor and PM minor for the BLS and PM/IS concentration for the BABA.

Not sure where you're seeing on this forum that someone completed a BS in YourPace as there isn't one available. Could you have read about a BAS or BLS? The BLS requires a minor and you can complete up to 3 minors at UMPI. There's not much to know except that you have to complete the required courses.

I think you chose the wrong school to be honest. Why did you choose POS to begin with? Obviously its going to be a writing based major...

Maybe the OP is looking for a BAS with minor in Political Science, so they can get an extra minor or two in something else along the way. Without the OP updating us with more details asked for in the linked addendum and template above in my post #3, they will need a lot more work with UMPI to get this done...

Hello,

I've decided to pursue political science because of my strong background in history, political science, literature, and languages from my home country. Given my knowledge in these fields, I believe I've chosen the right academic path. While I'm confident I can handle the coursework in political science and history without any issues, I wanted just to ask for recommendations on majors that don't involve as much writing. Additionally, regarding minors, I noticed someone on a forum mentioned earning a bachelor's degree in science with minors in computer information systems and political science, which has sparked my interest.

Thank you for your help.

So UMPI did away with tests, every major is going to be at LEAST writing centric. Hence my comment about choosing the wrong school.

I did the HTY/POS degree in one term. The writing is extremely manageable and a lot less than most schools. Just do the work if that’s truly where your interests lie and add on minors as you see fit.

You are overthinking and psyching yourself out.

Like I said previously, there is no bachelor's degree in science at UMPI. There isn't a CIS minor available at UMPI on campus or in YourPace. YourPace has a handful of minors. If you changed to the BLS degree, you'd have to complete a minor and the POS minor will still have writing. All courses at UMPI have a great deal of writing. The POS/HTY courses have the least amount of writing. There is an MIS minor and a PM minor. Both of these minors have more writing than the poli sci minor. The POS/HTY major has the least writing of the degrees at UMPI. There is no escaping writing at UMPI. There are no tests.
