UMPI BLS degree planning advice
#1
Hello! I would apreciate any input on my degree planning. I am an absolute newbie here and to college hacking so please bear with me.

Your Location: Cailfornia, United States.
Your Age: 45
What kind of degree do you want?: Bachelor (maybe BLS?)
Current Regional Accredited Credits: I have an associate degree on behavioral sciences (with 4 additional child development classes that won't transfer anywhere, apparently) From Pasadena City college in CA (ENG 1A, ENG 1B, POLSC 1, PSYCH 1, SOC 1, MUSC 21, MATH 3, ANTH 1, HIST 7A)
These are the equivalencies for transfer to UMPI:
Subject - credits - grade
ENG 101 3 credits A
ENG 121 3 credits A
POS 101 3 credits B
PSY 100 3 credits B
SOC 100 3 credits A
ART 107 3 credits B
MAT 117 3 credits B
ANT 100 3 credits A
HTY 161 3 credits C

I also have the next that I'm not sure would transfer??

SPEECH 10 3 credits B
PSYCH 21 3 credits B
ITALN 1 5 credits B
GEOG 1 3 credits A
HED (health ed) 3 credits A
PEACT 39B 1 credit A
CHDV 10  3 credits A
CHDV 15 3 credits B
CHDV 117 3 credits C
CHDV 120 3 credits A

From  CAL State LA (started courses for Legal interpretation and translation)
ML790A 5 credits A
ML 790B  5 credits B

Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: none
Any certifications or military experience? no
Budget: The lower the better
Commitments: Stay at home mother of 2 school age children, and wife (husband works from home)
Dedicated time to study: Most weekday mornings and some evenings after kids in bed
Timeline: ASAP
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: None

I'm a married mother of 2 kids in school, live in CA. I am fluent in Spanish (born and raised in South America). I think UMPI could be a good fit for me time-wise and money-wise. I am not sure whether to pursue a BLS. I wanna have a degree to check the box but hopefully in the future achieve a masters and put it to work.
I have a chance to work as a sub at my kids' school (temporarily), which requires a bachelor degree in any area. However, I do not desire to work as a teacher (I used to, in the past), therefore my dilemma on what kind of degree. I am pretty good at liberal arts and I used to love science subjects. However, I find it a bit harder to do math and such in english, but I am a fast learner.

I want to be able to transfer the maximum amount of credits permitted by UMPI (90 credits) through Sophia or CLEP, but I have no idea which classes are recommended in order to not exceed the max needed per group category. I looked at the UMPI General ED curriculum and I am not sure whether that appplies to YOUR PACE as well.

Also, I am confused about the total amount of GE required. On effective written and oral communication the subcategories A and D for example, repeat  ENG 101. Can my ENG 101 apply to both A and D? or do I have to fulfill one of the ctaegories with another class such as ENG 100?
Thanks for any help !!!

Hello! I am looking into completing a BLS (waiting on suggestions from my initial post on degree planning) and, as I review te requirements for Educ Studies minor it states I need 40 credits toward GE, 24 for minor and 56 for electives.
Is there someone completing this minor who can tell me which course is missing there?  Huh

Minor classes: EDU 152, 153, 210, 287, 302, 305, 357  For 21 credits
or is it a mistake on the website, and is only 21 towards minor and 3 more on electives or GE?

Thanks for any input!!

PLEASE DISREGARD, I FOUND THE ANSWER ON THE WIKI, MY APOLOGIES

@MCMDF79, Welcome to the board, great initial post with the addendum and template! Your best option is to apply, get your transcripts evaluated and then you'll know where you stand. It would be ideal to attach the academic evaluation indicating what remaining classes you have, they'll highlight it in yellow. You can then try to complete the remaining credits by transferring the max of 90 credits (more credits can come in, but not to be used towards the degree), then finish the remaining requirements at UMPI.

Thanks so much for this suggestion. This may be a dumb question, but if I apply before completing all the credits I want from Sophia, will UMPI allow me to transfer them? I thought once I apply I only transfer what I have and I'm stuck taking ALL of their courses.

Thank you so much to every person who adds information on this forum. I am trying to read as much as I can from threads, posts and wiki and I have learned a ton in just a few days!!

UMPI allows you to add classes to your academic evaluation with permission, WGU is one of the few that do not allow you to add classes if you've enrolled with them. Obviously, it's best to get all the info sent into UMPI the best you can, but because you don't know how each and every class will transfer, you need the academic evaluation to know where the remaining classes are.

When you get your evaluation back (or if you want to be proactive)... Create a spreadsheet and follow the WIKI plans, you may be able to put these in an orderly fashion and map the classes as what they may take them. You can then share this on your google or one drive as a viewable (not editable) file, link us to it and we can comment on possible modifications to your degree plan.

This is awesome!! I started creating my spreadsheet this morning to condense all the info I have/found in one place, so I guess I am on the right track. Thanks again!!

I just applied! But I did not see a place to state I have an associate degree or to put in how many credits I think I have, just the college info and dates I attended.
It only asked whether I have a bachelor degree, which I do not. Did I miss it? did I mess up?  Undecided Sorry if my questions are out there  Blush

Oh! You applied! No... Problem. Application is just that, you still need to submit your transcripts and they'll evaluate everything. Once done, they'll know which degree you're going for and what you bring to the table. When the evaluation comes, review the info in yellow highlights as those are the remaining classes. If you know already what classes you're missing from the degree plans, take the classes from Sophia.org or Study.com by using the coupons on this link: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...ed-Version

Great, I will have my transcripts sent over and will start taking some courses. Would you advice against CLEP exams?

If you have the energy and time to study for CLEP using Modern States, that would work as they do accept certain CLEPs. Here's the page, they have a link for the equivalency list: https://www.umpi.edu/offices/testing-services/clep/
