Edit Reason: typo fix
)
Hello everyone.
I hope I provide enough info here and thank you in advance for any help. here goes.
I am interested in an accounting degree from UMPI the BA or the BABA are what I am leaning toward.
I took a bunch of Sophia courses a couple of years ago, which i will list below. I am trying to match them up using the Wiki for the degrees here.
and also see what else i can take at sophia becuase i really like the ease and speed of their courses. they just work for me i guess.
I did make a phone call to the school on my second question and as I was expecting, they could not really answer without applying first so I wanted
to see if any of the experts here could offer a "best guess" about credit for other experience
I have passed all 3 IRS Enrolled Agent exams. also known as the SEE exams. (think cpa exams but for IRS license) and i am both quickbooks pro advisor certified
along with Xero (quickbooks competitor) certified. I have also done a few of the Intuit accountant courses (badges type stuff)
The Fed Tax 1 and 2 would seem to be easily covered by the IRS exams in my mind but not sure about the schools opinion on it. If I can represent people just as
a CPA or an Attorney could - I would like to think its equal to undergrad tax classes.
anyway. the sophias i have taken I will list and if anyone can help make sure I am on the right path of what others to take that can be applied at UMPI i would appreciate it
Sophia Courses - except the Foundation of Stats class Sophia lists them all as 3 credits but I believe UMPI counts Micro and Macro Eco as 1 course (3 credits)
English Comp 1
Environmental Science
Art History 1
Visual Communications
Introductions to Ethics
Ancient Greek Philosophers
Approaches to Studying Religions
Human Biology - no lab
College Algebra
Foundations of Statistics 2 credits
College Readiness
Financial Accounting
Introduction to Business
Introduction to Information Technology
Introduction to Psychology
Macroeconomics
Microeconomics
Project Management
US History 1
US History 2
Again, thanks for any replies

This page has the degree plans for UMPI including the general education requirements - you can review the BA in Accounting and the BBA with the Accounting concentration to see which fits your plans better: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:UMPI
Since you have both microeconomics and macroeconomics, you will get credits for ECO 207 and elective credits for ECO 2XX for a total of 6 credits.
You still need a lab and a foreign language for your general education.
You can definitely bring down the number of classes required at UMPI using a combination of Sophia and some Study dot com. Just keep in mind that you need a minimum of 30 credits at UMPI.
Completed: HAU MBA | BA Economics (US) | Finland Open Studies @ XAMK/Metropolia/Helsinki/Laurea
Certs Completed: Scrum CSPO/CSM | Google PM/Data Analytics/Marketing

Welcome to the board, that's a great initial post to get the ball rolling, it's just missing a bit of info from the addendum and template. How long did it take you to get those Sophia.org classes completed? You may want to provide more details asked for here, so we can gauge your budget, commitments, study habits, etc: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...Area-works

Thanks for the reply. ok. so i think i understand now. the macro/micro are still worth 6 credits just done a little different than i was expecting. thank you!
i have been looking at the wiki pages for them and where I'm getting lost is on some of the tables that have blanks.
I assume that means they should just be taken at UMPI directly
The lab part - is it best to do the 1 credit biology lab at sophia to finish that off?
any thoughts at all on the credit for the exams and certifications part? i ask because i know sometimes schools give credit for things like I.T. certs so i was thinking along that line
thank you again!

Thanks for commenting. The Sophia courses i did over a couple of months. I dont mind basically spending an entire day just finishing off a course which is what i meant
when i said Sophia just works for me. i like the format and can get through them pretty quickly.
From what I have read I would say that the Saylor stuff would be the exact opposite.
I am in New York and had at one point thought about Excelsior but unless I am completely not understanding, UMPI would be probably substantially less cost if I could finish off the
30 credits from them in 1 or 2 sessions.
The Excelsior only requiring 2 courses with them is nice but the Enrollment and graduation fees fees fees just seem to add up to plenty more than a couple of UMPI
hope that fills some info gaps and I appreciate the help

Hello. I finsihed the BA Accounting degree at UMPI and am now emrolled in the MAcc at WGU, so I can answer a few of the Accounting Specific questions. First off, you aren't getting any course credit for the Enrolled Agent or SEE IRS Exams, so just let that though go. You *could* try the PLA credit route for those but it's be at signifigant cost and pretty much a waste of your time. Also, I see that you are in New York. The New York Board of Accountancy is *extremely* specific on which courses and degrees (i.e.: AACSB, etc) they are willing to accept for licensure, so you need to figure out if your eventually want to become a NY CPA, and if so, how your alternative coursework from Sophia, SDC, will be accepted by them. The quick alternative route that I and most other UMOI Accounting students take may not be available to you, if this is the route you seek. Good Luck.

Yes, UMPI requires the science course and the lab to come from the same place.
Amberton - MSHRB
TESU - ASNSM/BSBA

Here's a post/thread you may want to review, I have a picture of my spreadsheet that shows the differences between the BA and BABA, I think it really depends on the state you're in and what their requirements are. I'd go and decide if BA or BABA would be fine for your needs. Link: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid390713

Thank you for the response. I was *thinking about it in terms of maybe one day the CDA route but not a specific goal. which is the reason i was thinking of those 2 degree options because at a quick bit of research i see the 24 accounting credit req. for NY CPA - that pretty much put the end to the BLS accounting. again, CPA is not a goal but more a side thought.
The SEE by way of portfolio assessment was basically what i was thinking. thank you for understanding what i was getting at. I wasnt exactly banking on that working and if its a ridiculous cost then i'd give up on it but it was a thought. So thank you (in a non sarcastic way) of raining on my parade. I wanted to know if that was a stupid idea or worth the effort.

This means there is no equivalent alternative credit course so you must take this course at UMPI.
If the transfer credits total more than 90, you must choose which courses not to take since you must take at least 10 courses at UMPI.

If you're considering becoming a CPA, please really review and understand what NYS requires. The will be changing the requirements in August 2027 as well. NY is VERY strict on required courses and ACE credit has not been accepted. They want RA credit. Go for the BA in Accounting. That's what you'll really need in addition. You're going to need 150 credits so consider a master's degree in the near future as well.
Forget the portfolio assessment. Those are charged per credit and you're not guaranteed to earn the credit. They require 3-5 paper each course plus documentation from work and managers. Take the courses at UMPI in YourPace. They're much faster and easier. They are also a flat tuition fee.
