UMBI Political Science Advice
#1
Hey everyone. I made a post a few days back and got great advice but I've changed my mind. I'm 41 years old and my main goal is to become a police officer within the next 3 years. Crazy at my age, I know, but I'm physically fit and it's always been a dream so I'm going for it. Originally I planned on a BA in criminal justice from UMBI but I've changed my mind to UMBI political science. I don't think a police department is going to care what my degree is in and political science gives me MANY more backup plans if the police thing don't work.

My goal is to get BOG by the end of the month. Then into UMBI in May. Done with UMBI in 2 sessions (8/23/24 - my birthday). Then maybe go on to Masters in Political Science somewhere. Right now I'm just focusing on as many Sophia courses as possible. I spoke to Nancy at Piermont and she gave me a basic outline and said that I can take whatever I want at Sophia to satisfy the 60 needed for BOG but I also want to make sure I can get some for UMBI as well.

My goal is to get BOG from Piermont in a few weeks and start UMPI in June. I'd like to know what Sophia/Study.com courses I can take to get as many credit for UMPI as possible. I've searched the plans and couldn't find anything on Political Science at UMBI.

Thank you guys!!

Here are the general requirement links for UMPI - note that for the major you need both Spanish I and II:

https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...quirements

Here is the link to the BA in History/Political Science - for example, you can take PoliSci 101, History 108/308 at Study: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...egree_Plan

Here is the UMPI link with the details about specific classes in the Political Science concentration:
https://www.umpi.edu/yourpace/academic_p...e/#courses

Most of the upper level courses are taken at UMPI, you need a minimum of 10 classes at UMPI.

Your future goal of being a police officer doesn't require a specific degree, just 'any' degree to check the box off... Seasons change, so does choices in degree planning decisions... Another option is similar to what I mentioned in your previous thread, UMPI BAS Political Science minor, get the 3-4 classes towards the MAOL and be done with a Bachelors (that has 3 classes completed for the Masters if you ever wanted to go that route later). Here's the link, the only difference is the minor of choice has changed to Political Science... https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...tes-Degree

Just a quick update on my progress. I've been doing A LOT of research here on how to get this done and it's been extremely helpful. I'm very grateful for that.

I decided to forgo the associates from Peirpont. Honestly they just weren't very responsive or helpful in getting it done and I've already been accepted to UMPI for the first summer session.

I have 57 credits from Sophia and 29.5 from Suffolk Community College. I've satisifed all my electives and gen ed credits for UMPI and 2 of my major requirements. They've accepted all my transfer credits besides one which was a duplicate (ethics in both Community College and Sophia). They've been very helpful and I'm looking forward to getting my degree in History/Political Science by August 23rd (2 sessions). Then moving on to their Masters program and hopefully have that completed by the end of the year.

This has been a big undertaking and I'm just getting started but once I had it all planned out and got deep into Sophia, I kind of breezed right through pretty easily. It was just about doing the work which is easy once you know what work you have to do.

Great work, Sophia.org and the general education/electives for UMPI are easy to do. The main part is the residency requirements for the degree (the major I should say), that section of the degree requires the most writing... Continue the momentum and move forward, you've got this! Again, great work so far, good luck...
