Sociology and Psychology on Sophia have a couple of papers apiece. The CLEP is a single exam. Some people prefer one, some prefer the other.

Sociology and Psychology were easy CLEPs. Additionally, the Management and Marketing exams count as upper-level electives at TAMUC.
Is there a reason you wouldn't do all of this on Sophia? Sophia seems a lot easier than taking the CLEPs and it has marketing and psychology also. It looks like study.com has a ton of business-y electives, like the HR stuff, which I started. Study.com costs more, but I'm fine with that.
Appreciate your thoughts on the prestige factor, it pretty much matches my thoughts. I think TAMUC is a good balance. I did most of this via Sophia. Sophia has a new American Government class on its way too so no need to take it elsewhere. I also had 3 classes from TEL that I used for RA credit. I can share my transcript that was accepted at TAMUC if that'll help.

CLEP was way more time-efficient for me than Sophia, and I didn't even bother with Sophia courses that required essays. I only needed to study a few hours for both CLEP exams. Plus, CLEP is nearly free with Modern States. MS gives you an exam voucher when you complete their free prep course.
As rachel83az said, it's really up to personal preference. If you don't mind spending extra time and money on Sophia, then you should be able to reach the 84 credits with Sophia alone. The extra essays are probably good practice for TAMUC courses since they're heavily essay/writing based.
I also didn't realize that Sophia offered American Government now. I would definitely go with Sophia as I've heard that the CLEP can be difficult.

I'm interested in any updates on TAMUC. Who are your contacts at the university? Still Tara Thompson? Should a student have all but the last 30 hours completed before they apply? I greatly appreciate all the discussion!

They should get as close as possible to maximum transfer before applying, yes. Technically, I think it is allowed to transfer in credits later, but that's usually going to be a waste of time/money. Especially important, based on previous feedback, is to try to complete an inexpensive Texas Government class elsewhere to transfer to TAMUC. That class at TAMUC is confusing and will slow you down.
