Testing center procedures?
#1
Friday when I went in to take my CLEP at our local community college the proctor hit me with a surprise. She said that I have to go in Monday(today) and talk with the registar of the school and register at the college before I can continue taking tests there. This floored me as I had asked before I went out there if they proctored for the community and not just students and was told yes. I watched very closely this time as she set up my computer for the test and noticed that she was having the results sent to our community college. I asked her about it and she said that is the way she is supposed to do it. I also noticed that "Do not send" was an option. I am wondering if that is what she should be choosing and am looking for any information from those of you who are more experienced before I go out to meet with the registar this afternoon. I think that I may be their first one from the community doing this so the more I know before I go the better.

Thank you in advance for your help,

Hi Kate,

My test center let's me select "Do not send". I'm not enrolled at their college, and they know that. I can't think why they would force you to send your scores to them. It's none of their business really! All they are doing is providing proctoring services, for which you pay them.

I would call your test center and discuss this with them. It may just be a misunderstanding.

Good luck,

Thank you, Snazz.

You are always so helpful. Just knowing for sure which option to choose helps me to feel more prepared to talk with them. This poor proctor doesn't seem to know much about any of these tests. She has only done GED, SAT,and a few others. No CLEP's before. It is often funny. Like I said, I think that I am the community test case so they are learning with me. I want to be sure and make it a good experience for the school too so that the next testor will have it easier. Smile

I have gone to two different testing centers at two different colleges. At both locations it was I who had to select where the results would be sent to.

They would input information on their pc's and tell me to go to a specific one to test on. Upon sitting there I would have to input my name and it would pull up my designated info that the proctor had inputed, but where it was sent was never already selected.

Called the school. They were very nice but said that they needed to look into it and call me back so I am still waiting to find out whether or not I can schedule the next test. The good news is that they seem really open to working it out so you must be right, Snazzlefrag. This must be just some kind of misunderstanding.

But now I am wondering, even though they had the results of my first 3 tests sent to them, CLEP is the only agency that I will need to request a transcript from when I matriculate later this year, right? I hope that's not a stupid question. I just don't know how the school side of things works.

Thanks for all your patience with this newbie,

Hi Librevore-
i can't understand why your proctoring site, which just happens to be your local community college (as is mine) makes you send your scores to them. clep lets you send your score to ONE place and why should it be them? if you might have decided on a college by now, i would send your results to that college and i believe they might hold your credits for six months until you enroll. even if you change your mind, you are no farther behind because clep will send your scores for a small fee.

I let her know that I was able to answer the questions in the beginning by myself the first time I was there. She told me that it was important for her to do it so that the results get sent to the right place! She always has me move over to another chair while she gets it set up. This is all starting to sound very strange. Please send whatever good thoughts you can this way! I am sure it will all get straightened out but, ughhhh!

Librevore,

You will only need to have CLEP send your transcripts to your eventual school. That's why I don't understand why the community college is making you send the scores to them.....this has nothing to do with them at all.

Don't worry okay? This is probably just a case of an inexperienced staffer trying her best to follow what she thinks is right procedure. Once you tell them you are not enrolling at their college, they should clear it all up for you.

Hi Kate,

I looked up your college on The CLEP site and it is a limited testing center.

Limited test centers restrict testing to students admitted to or enrolled at the institution.
http://apps.collegeboard.com/cbsearch_clep/

Are there any private schools in your area? They often offer CLEP testing, but do not always advertise. If not, you might suggest that they check this out as another income source. I take my CLEP exams at a local Christian school. Also, you might check any military base in your area as they also often offer CLEP exams.

Hope this helps,

Crystal
