Temporarily Switching Directions

videogamesrock Wrote:You just described learning a valuable trade versus philosophical degrees. Spot on!

Computer science is a theoretical degree just like psychology. Social work is an applied degree that leads to licensure. Dental hygiene and medical assisting are allied health vocations, not trades. However, even though they are in very similar fields, there is a significant difference in median salaries between the two.

mattack91 Wrote:Hi guys,

Currently, I'm sitting on 93 credits towards my BA in History. Unfortunately though, due to some issues (Being intentionally vague due to the forum), my current place of work has become fairly toxic, I haven't been able to focus on finishing my degree and my studies (Signed up for the LSAT in September) due to it, and I'm looking to move on.
s.

I know exactly where you are coming from. Keep going for the BA and look for another job - not intensively, just enough to make you feel better while jumping into the fray every day. This is what I did and oddly, got a job offer out of it. My new job isn't my perfect job but a great learning opportunity, better schedule for work/family/ school balance and so much less stressful than my old job. Now I'm finishing my degree in peace and have applied to WGU for my masters. Even when I wasn't getting bites, submitting my resume helped me believe that I'd be out someday and kept me going.

Computer science is more theoretical than electrical engineering. There is less application in computer science curriculum than engineering curriculum. That is why some schools classify computer science as a liberal art.

The trades include things like welding, plumbing, and carpentry. There are a few organizations that have a list of trades. Allied health careers are not trades. There are several trades and allied health careers that don't pay very well. Each field should be evaluated individually.

Thanks guys for all the responses. I'm glad I posted this because it gave me some time to calm down and not get off track. The job hasn't gott better, but it's manageable to finish my degree.

Thanks again guys.
