TESU BA in English after Shmoop
#1
Since TESU is no longer accepting Shmoop, what has happened to the TESU BA in English? Are all/most course credits still obtainable through others like Study.com, Straighterline, Saylor, etc.? Although more costly, is it still doable? Primarily what has changed?

There is just no inexpensive way to get the UL English/Lit courses from the normal providers. Shmoop was the only way, and even if TESU were to accept them in the future, they wouldn't give UL credit any longer.

The only UL courses I know of:
Study.com ($199/mo) - ENGL 305: Advanced Technical Writing (ENG-306)
SecularCourses.com ($150) - Medieval Hispano-Jewish Poetry UL
Penn Foster ($379) - Advanced Composition UL (not sure how/if this would work)
U of Idaho IS ($510) - ENGL 4476: Shakespeare
- they also have 2 LL courses that would fulfill the Nonwestern Lit requirement: World Literature I and World Literature II (17th Century to present)
CSU-Pueblo IS ($555) - ENG 354: Rediscovering the Fairy Tale & ENG 370: Women Writers of SciFi
LSU Distance Learning ($795) - 6 UL courses

it definitely got alot harder but you can still get 1 UL English course from Study.com. you can get 1 from Coopersmith too. You only need 4 UL English for that degree so I think it's still doable

if you take African Lit through TESU for your non-western Lit course, that is UL as well, or you can take "Non-Western Lit" from TESU, which is also UL and fulfills the same requirement. I don't believe SL or Saylor offer any UL English courses at all. Sophia doesn't either, as far as I know. But you can for sure do it still, it's just a little more trouble and money.

the main thing that's changed is that with Shmoop you could do half of a BA in English in a couple of weeks and now you can't. Also Shmoop had some quirky course offerings and it was extremely cheap so it made a nice alternative.
Study.com - 177 CR. TESU - 39 CR. Middle Georgia State University - 15 CR. Sonoran Desert Institute - 42 CR. COSC - 6 CR. Excelsior - 6 CR. CLEP - 6 CR. Sophia - 14 CR. TEEX - 2 CR. Shmoop - 18 CR. NFA - 4 CR. The Institutes - 2 CR. FEMA - 20ish

BA in History/English from TESU.
BA in Communications from TESU. AS in Firearms Technology from SDI.

I think someone confirmed that TESU would give undergrad credit for the Harvard Extension Poetry classes, which are currently only $200 plus a $50 fee. Not $200 per credit, but $200 per class, and there is an option to get graduate credit. I think the $50 is only for your first class with them. The Harvard ones are somewhat limited, about two per semester.

Would this count as the Non-Western Literature course?

Ah, that's great!

Is ENGL 315: Writing for Social Sciences part of those 17 courses (which would count as a UL Area of Study course)?

Is this the course? It's called 'Poetry in America for Teachers', but anyone can take it?

Maybe you were in an older catalog year? Mine needs 5 UL English in addition to the Capstone being UL.

Yes, anyone can take them. There are 2 courses of the series being offered in Spring, and we don't know if any will be offered after that. Registration ends in a few days, but they offer late registration too.

I was told no, and others were told no for other similar (Jewish) courses.

The Poetry in America Courses for Teachers, can be taken by anyone. I took the Whitman to Hip Hop for teachers and I am not a teacher, but it is centered around teaching. I know some undergraduate students took that one as well. However, if you are undergraduate and you want upper level credit, you should take it for graduate credit. The ENGL 305 should come in as upper level, but they are also offering ENGL 182M, Poetry in America: From the Civil War through Modernism. You can choose whether to take it for undergraduate or graduate credit, and you should choose graduate, even if you are undergraduate. That should award you upper level credit, from what I am hearing.
