TESC policy change requiring 300/400 for UL?

Did I miss it before, or is this a change in policy for TESC?

If choosing Option A:Area of Concentration or Option C: Liberal Studies Area for a BA, it states:

"A maximum of 6 credits at the 100 level and a minimum of 18 credits at the 300 or 400 level must be earned" of the 33 required -- I'm reading pg 52 of the 09-10 catalog.

This is not so for option B: Area of Study. Just need 33 credits in one subject area.

Is this new? I thought 200 level would apply for UL credits in these categories.

HOLD THE PHONE! THIS IS NEW! I just went in and double checked all the course distributions- they have all been changed! This will change the degree plans for the following 4 programs. The others don't appear to have this blanket rule, like cfame points out in option B, single subject majors seem to be unchanged.

BA Humanities
BA Social Science
BA Math/Natural Sciences

But if TE is like other colleges anyone already enrolled in one of the 4 programs would be allowed to graduate under the policies of the catalog that was in use when they started.

In the past I bet some ppl picked tesc because the 4 majors mentioned gave UL for 200 and above. When I looked into the tesc BA in Social Sciences and Liberal Studies the requirements seemed too easy. They're probably trying to make those majors more demanding. Thanks for posting about this new policy.

True, that is why i was going to go for a second degree in natural sci/ math, after my BSBA because I knew there were far more courses TESC offered at the 200 level that would allow me to complete the degree.

I mean they equate physics to a 100 series course and believe me if your going to complete a real physics I and II series, your going to need calculus. The other question is, if you transfer in a physics course that was rated as a 300 series course at another school, will it transfer in as 300 level or the course equivalent of 100.

In fact I just looked and TESC offers no math, biology, chem or natural science courses in a 300 or 400 series. The only course they offer is one 300 course in environmental science.

So if all these course equivalents are 200 series, what do you have to do to get a 300-400 series course transfered in because I thought TESC had to offer an equivalent course to equate it to? And if all theirs are 200 level then.....?

I'm sure to be calling TESC in the morning to find out.

Still the least they could have done was to post the change in advance and allow you to join the program before the change took affect.

Even Charter Oak gave a months notice of its change requiring the new capstone course.

Good questions/excellent point addision. If they don't offer enough 300/400 math & science courses and there aren't enough UL test out options.....AND they downgrade your PREVIOUS math and science credits....Well then what?

I get why they tightened up the other majors but not the BA Math/Natural Sciences. I mean all math, physics and biology courses above 200 are rigorous.

Ok, I called TESC regarding this, the advisor immediately knew of what I was speaking of.

She did say that the change was affective July 1st. She has had many calls about this and the advisement team has voiced its concerns to the administration (but don't expect that to go far).

She said yes if the degree calls for 300-400 level courses then those are required for the degree.

I asked what will happen to courses transfered in from another school that are 300-400 level. Her response was that the will give you the level of the course as it was completed. So if you did a 300 series course it should stay a 300 series course. (whew)

Since most CLEP and DSST are lower level that shouldn't make a big difference. She also said this is why the TECEP exams were pulled, so they could update them for the new requirements.

So I go and look at a number of the courses I was going to take, yep they are 200 level.

So the best you can do for the 33 units for the major is:

2- 100 level courses 6 units*
3- 200 level courses 9 units*
6- 300/400 courses 18 units (required)*

So NOW we know why they pulled those teceps. Seems like to get the correct information from tesc you often have to ask 3 people then connect the dots. Sheesh!

Makes me curious as to if they're going to bring the other programs (in particular the BSBA) up to snuff as well...
