TESC course fees?
#1
Anyone know how much it would cost to take individual courses at Thomas Edison State College without enrollment, and also the cost of the Guided Study courses?

Guided Study and Online courses are the same cost.

Thomas Edison State College | Enrolled Options Plan

Course Tuition (per credit attempted)
New Jersey residents $141.00
Out-of-state residents $193.00
Non-enrolled students*** $369.00

--------------------------------------------------------------------
On a separate note it is just my personal opinion but it seems some are misquoting TESC being more expensive than Excelsior or COSC. What happens is they quote the enrolled options tuition as being much more than the other two but TESC's tuition per credit is much lower than the other schools.

It's been a couple of months since I've used the cost calculator on the TESC website so my memory may be a little off, but it seemed way more expensive due to the cost of transferring in test credits. I believe it was $83 per credit for that. So in addition to paying for the test, you would also pay $249 for each 3-credit test you transfer in to TESC. EC doesn't charge anything to transfer in test credits. $249 multiple times adds up fast, compared to $0 multiple times.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on this, but when I used the cost calculator on the website, the cost was very high when figuring in a bunch of testing credits. I suppose if you weren't planning on doing much testing, then TESC would be cheaper.

This is the main reason I'm choosing EC over TESC, so do please tell me if I have it wrong.

Okay, I just went to the TESC website and used the cost calculator with the following figures:

12 transfer credits
99 testing credits
9 TESC college course credits
1 year to complete degree

Total: $13,476 (This included things like application fee, graduation fee, etc.)
(In addition to this is the cost of the 99 credits worth of testing -- CLEP, DSST, etc.)

Here are my figures for EC:

$75 -- application fee
$895 -- enrollment fee
$1380 -- 4 credits from EC
$0 to transfer in 12 credits from a B&M and 104 testing credits
$495 -- graduation fee
Complete in 1 year after enrolling

total: $2845 (plus cost of tests)

Now maybe TESC doesn't charge to transfer in test credits, but it seems like it does.

I think you guys are misunderstanding. From what I can tell, the testing credit is referring to TECEP testing. If you click on the link that says "Testing," it states that it's referring to TECEP's. I've never heard of any fee for transferring in CLEP or other proficiency exam credits and from what I can gather from their site (http://www.tesc.edu/files/Tuition_and_Fees.pdf ), there is no fee for transferring in anything.
I'm an engineer. Go figure.

Oh, that's good to know. Unfortunately, with the cost calculator on their website, the only credits you can transfer in (using the cost calculator) are from regionally accredited schools. So there is nowhere to plug things like CLEP/DSST into the cost calculator. At the same time, what you plug into the calculator has to add up to 120 credits, which is why I put the CLEP, etc. credits under testing credits, since that seemed the only place to put them.

Even with the test credits transferring in free, it is approximately $1,000 more than EC, based on my scenario of 12 transfer credits, 4 TESC course credits, and 104 CLEP, etc. credits. So at least it isn't nearly as expensive as I thought, though God help you if you take more than a year to finish.

Instead of using a cost calculator maybe call admissions and have them walk you through the process.

There is no fee for transferring in credit by exam credits. Once you apply to the school $75 you have all transcripts (Prometric, CLEP, ACE, ..etc) sent to TESC for evaluation. There is no fee. I am now working on my third degree and the total estimate of all three degrees (AAS, BA, BS) is $7100-$7500 including 1yr comprehensive, 1yr enrolled options, 3 grad fees, PF courses, SL courses and CLEP/DSST.

If you are referring to credit banking thats something different since there is no enrollment and yes it has a fee.

Wow, $7500 for all 3 degrees, including tests and everything? I'd love to see a breakdown of costs. I'm assuming you're completing all 3 degrees in one year. Wow!

Good thought on calling them. I just figured the cost calculator on the website would be accurate.

Sirjake was right, you were incorrectly adding in the tecep cost for exams. It makes perfect sense that TESC's cost calculator would use their own testing fee as a base for the estimate. Since you are using dsst/clep you have to adjust the final estimated costs with those exams (35x100~$3500 vs $9030 TECEPs).

I am not going to list all my costs on this board. But I will say I transferred in 21 CC credits and the actual time with TESC for the 3 degrees is going to be more like 1.5years (1st class to 3rd grad date 9/2009-3/2011). I'm taking my time with the current program. If I were you I would decide on a school, complete a FAFSA and then work with the school to realize your best outcome. You would be surprised what you can accomplish in year 1. This is why I am now going for the 2nd bachelors.

You can only get an estimate using an online calculator, not exact figures. Depending on the availability of courses your curriculum can change. Some have been able to test out completely or take one to a few courses through the school. I did not test out completely; my credits were/will be earned equally between testing, alternate courses and tesc courses. That said your costs will differ from mine.

The same EC scenario (less the information literacy 1cr) as a NJ resident :
$75 -- application fee
$1446 -- enrollment fee
$107 -- technology fee (required with enrollment)
$47 -- semester registration fee
$423 -- 3 credits from TESC (1 course for GPA but not required; BS capstone can be taken by course or tecep)
$0 to transfer in 12 credits from a B&M and 105 testing credits
$257 -- graduation fee
Complete in 1 year after enrolling

total: $2355 (plus cost of tests)

out of state total: $3761 (plus cost of tests)

Hi,

When my daughter graduated from TESC last year we only paid them around $3600. That included the app. fee, enrollment fee, graduation fee, and one course. Of course, we also had previously paid for her CLEPs, DSST's, one ECE, an Aleks course, and some Penn Foster courses. However, with 27 totally FREE Fema and NFA credits it was a really good deal.
