TESC and computer science
#1
Hey guys I'm realizing I'm quite close to a computer science degree. Well, i might be.

I noticed there are different codes for courses in computers.

CIS - Computer Information Systems
CMP - ??
COS - Computer Science

I wonder if all three types are valid for
Computer science. I ask because some courses seem like they should (there's a CIS Software engineering), and others don't (database management)

Just curious if anyone had such experience. Thanks

I'd say it depends on the school
both Columbia and Harvard have databases courses as part of their CS program

Harvard has CS 165 and CS 265

Computer Science Courses

[Computer Science 165. Information Management]
Catalog Number: 0560
Instructor to be determined.
Half course (spring term). Tu., Th., 1-2:30. EXAM GROUP: 15, 16
Covers the fundamental concepts of database and information management. Data models: relational, object-oriented, and other; implementation techniques of database management systems, such as indexing structures, concurrency control, recovery, and query processing; management of unstructured data; terabyte-scale databases.

[Computer Science 265. Database Systems]
Catalog Number: 2083
Instructor to be determined.
Half course (fall term). Tu., Th., 1-2:30. EXAM GROUP: 15, 16
A research-oriented introduction to Database Management systems. First third covers database design, implementation, and use. Topics include: network, relational, and object oriented database models, system architectures, transaction processing, system implementation, and SQL. Remaining two-thirds address research literature surrounding database systems, including an historical perspective, the emergence of relational and object-oriented systems, concurrency control, and distributed systems. Students will be expected to undertake a final research project.
Prerequisite:CS 165 or permission of instructor.

Columbia University has COMS W4111

Courses | Bulletin | Columbia Engineering

COMS W4111x and y
Introduction to databases 3 pts. Lect: 3. Prerequisites: COMS W3137 or W3134, fluency in Java; or permission of the instructor. The fundamentals of database design and application development using databases: entity-relationship modeling, logical design of relational databases, relational data definition and manipulation languages, SQL, XML, query processing, physical database tuning, transaction processing, security. Programming projects are required.

Members have reported here that CMP-354 Network Technology, (available through a TECEP exam, $99 plus any test center fee), is counted as Natural Sciences.

The computer related areas are normally:
Computer Applications (CAP)
Computer Information Systems (CIS)
Computer Science Technology (CMP)
Computer Science (COS)

I'm going to say MAYBE to your question. My guess is CIS, CMP, and COS will work but that CAP may not. Check out the TESC list of types of courses (which is very generic) at: Thomas Edison State College: Computer Science

If I run an eval for the BA in Computer Science then here is what the area of study looks like (see below). The good news is the CLEP Info Sys OR DSST Intro to Computing, along with DSST Management Information Systems both apply to the area of study. Remember the capstone applies to the UL requirement (and if this is a second area of study make sure you don't go over nine overlapping credits in the area of study).

Good Luck!

I just completed the BA Computer Science degree at TESC and will be graduating in September. My advice is avoid CMP and CAP courses for your area of study courses. My transfer credits with CMP and CAP prefixes did not apply towards my area of study. They may apply as free electives, natural sciences, etc. I believe all CIS and COS courses will apply to BA Comp. Sci. area of study.

Also, if you plan to go on to a masters degree then give that some thought as well when picking courses. Check the prerequisites of various masters programs. I got accepted to a MS Comp. Sci. program but have to take Systems Programming as a prerequisite because I did not take it as part of my undergrad degree. If I would have taken COS-231 Assembly Language at TESC I might not have to take Systems Programming as a prerequisite of my MSCS program. I took Discrete Math at TESC over Linear Algebra as most MSCS program require it.

Let me know if you have any more questions. I will try to answer.

Both CIS-351 Software Engineering and CIS-311 Database Management counted towards my area of study for computer science.

Download the PDF catalog from TESC and search for NASC as this will show the table in the catalog that lists which classes are NASC (natural science), SOSC (social science), etc.
