Syracuse University Lawsuit
#1
A class-action suit alleging that students should be reimbursed for having to move to online classes, a less effective teaching/learning modality.

I know many schools around here prorated room & board refunds but they didn't refund tuition. SU is one of the schools near me. Students were VERY upset to be paying these private school tuition rates - ridiculously high tuition - and be home learning remotely. That's not what they signed up for. I see both sides of this. Students didn't get access to lab rooms, libraries, etc. Those things are included in their tuition. Sorry, but online libraries are not the same thing. Labs taught remotely aren't the same either. They also lost out on working with lab partners. The music students were really screwed. I don't see how colleges can say too bad no refund. I mean they did and they're now being sued. I wouldn't be surprised to see other schools sued. I know Cornell students were also extremely vocal about wanting refunds.

I know LOTS of college students, all of them complained at how terrible it was, NONE got any tuition back in spite of the fact that the quality was subpar.

They all deserve at least a partial refund on tuition.

If I went to a private school that is doing online remote learning might as well transfer to an online-based school or state university for cheaper. People want the university or school name on their degree hence why they continue still pay the ridiculous tuition fees.

Yeah they're paying for the SU name and recognition not the WGU name and recognition. They're also missing out on all of the networking which is HUGE at SU.

So.... the article says "Students arguably got a worse education during the spring 2020 semester because they moved online, however, this lawsuit sets a dangerous precedent for colleges and universities nationwide." The precedent it's talking about is schools being sued but wouldn't it also set the precedent about the inferiority of online learning? Couldn't that snowball very quickly?

I think that is definitely a slippery slope. I understand their frustration but the entire WORLD was put into difficult positions. They need to suck it up and move forward. Yes, it sucked, but the university didn’t just decide one day to flip the switch. EVERYONE sacrificed something. EVERYONE.

Even a traditional school like Syracuse has online degrees, that are built from the planning stage for the online modality. Even if the plaintiffs prove what they allege, a program that is thrown online in a couple weeks is likely different (and lower) quality than one built (and refined iteratively) to be given online.

I saw an ad on Facebook this week, ironically about online programs from Syracuse. They advertised their online Bachelors' degrees as less expensive than on-campus tuition. Interesting in light of this.
