Confused about UMPI admission requirements
#1
Hi,
I'm getting everything ready to apply to UMPI, I've got about 91 credits following the plans on the forum, most of them from Sophia.
I've emailed them asking about the Duolingo english test and if I still need to send my high school transcripts, since i already have so many college credits. Here is what the enrollment specialist emailed me back:
Quote:I received a notification that you had questions regarding the Liberal Studies program. I wanted to reach out to you and let you know that the admissions department accepts TOFEL & IELTS test scores. International students are required to demonstrate English proficiency by submitting a TOEFL (71 IBT / 197 CBT / 530 PBT minimums) or IELTS (6.0 minimum). Students can obtain a waiver for this requirement if they come from an English-speaking country or have successfully completed a credit-bearing college level written and spoken English course (ESL courses do not fulfill this requirement). If your ACE courses reflect college level written and spoken English, that counts as well. Also, your ACE credits would fall under the Prior Learning Assessment category, and you can use prior learning assessment for up to 30 credits. If a student has less than 60 transfer credits the admissions department will still need the official high school transcript.

I'm confused by this, because he is saying that only 30 ACE credits can be transfer in, whilst i read here that you can transfer as many as you like, as long as you take 30 credits with them to fullfil the residency requirement.
I'd appreciate it if someone with more insight could clear some of this up for me.

Technically, "he" you're referring to is correct as it depends on which degree or program you're going for. The University of Maine campuses all have slightly different requirements, if you're going for the NON YourPace program, I recall it only does accept 30 credits that are ACE. However, if you're on the YourPace system, they've recently changed it to allow 90 alternative credits through ACE and non RA equivalent providers.

Hi there. Where are you from? Your country of origin can change your answer for the English requirements.

When contacting UMPI make sure you use contact information from online.umpi.edu that subdomain is incredibly important. While the catalog, etc, on the main UMPI website has useful information, YourPace has a lot of "little rule" changes and they cannot be taken as a true source.

You can transfer an unlimited amount of ACE into the YourPace program. But, to the in-person program this is 30. Make sure that you tell them that you are applying to YourPace. This is a separate admissions process.

I should've specified I'll be going for the YourPace program, and I used the email address i found on the online.umpi.edu website.
That's why i was so confused about the answer I received, because it seemed more like a on campus requirement.

I'm from Austria, and I didn't take English composition at Sophia, so I would need a proficiency test, from what I understand.

You will also need to complete English Comp at UMPI in addition to the TOEFL exam. The person who responded to you was talking about the on campus program. I will get you the YourPace admissions counselor's email address and send it to you in a pm. She will be able to help you with your application process and what will be needed. It's a bit different for international students.

ETA: PM sent!

I'm glad that has been sorted out (hopefully), people get very easily confused with the "online Yourpace" option and the regular butt in seat ones. The webpage isn't all that helpful either (at least that's how I see it myself)... Get it straightened out and you should be well on your way!

In case anyone might be looking for this information in the future.

As of right now, YourPace accepts TOEFL, IELTS or a college level English course as proof of English proficiency.

And if you transfer in over 60 credits (ACE also counts) you don't need to send your high school transcripts.

Edit: Obviously do double check with admissions before your finalize you application.

The 60 credit thing is NOT consistent! Some people have had to get their high school transcripts even with 60+ credits. I was waived because I had an associate degree. A previous degree is the only thing that has guaranteed a waiver on the high school transcripts. International students may be impacted differently than US residents.
