Success

I haven't posted here in quite a while . . . I was busy working on my degree. :coolgleam:

Well, today the final goal came into being. See, I finished my degree (computer science from TESC) back in July, but just getting a degree wasn't what I was after. I wanted to break in to software dev, and I knew it was going to be tough. I live in the Milwaukee metro area and the only kinds of jobs are ASP.NET and Java (with some embedded work). TESC teaches C, C++ and Assembly, which is great if this were 1988.

So, I started teaching myself ASP.NET and C#. I created two simple, sample projects and then I started applying at companies that take on entry-level software developers. Today a local company (an awesome place to work!) extended an offer to me and I accepted.

Yes!!! Success, and the TESC was a big part of it (as was learning ASP.NET MVC on my own). They went and verified my degree and had no issues in terms of it being an online degree. Good stuff.

Just wanted to share . . .

I looked into Javaonline.org . . . TESC told me that they probably wouldn't apply against my core requirements and would have to go into free electives. I didn't like that from a cost basis (as I got all my free electives from FEMA for free as TESC was still taking them). Good point though...

Not only did I tell them it was an online degree, I told them I did it in 18 months and explained how I used CLEPs, etc. I had several interviews with multiple companies. None seemed turned off by it. Rather they were fascinated that I was able to do it in the way I did.

It would usually come up that it was an online degree when they'd ask about the college where I got my degree. They'd ask where it was located, and I'd tell them Trenton, NJ. Then I'd follow right up with the fact that it was online, and I was a non-traditional student. That satisfied them.

I was told that they haven't been evaluated yet and to contact the registrar. I'm still waiting for a response. I would be using them for the CIS certificate.
