Study help needed
#1
Hi everyone,

My husband and I just moved and we didn't find out until we called the phone company that internet service is still one block away. It will be about a month before we can hook up. (I do not know if I can survive this! I am NOT an IC addict, I am NOT an IC addict...)

Here's my question - I've been studying for the accounting exam. Any suggestions on the best materials to continue to study with now that IC/internet tools will be just an occasional midnight trip to Starbucks?

Thanks in advance,
Librevore

Hey kate you can always head over to the library and study there. Big Grin

Is it just dsl that will take a month? Or can you use a dialup company until then? It would be slow but for the flashcards you don't really need it to be superfast.

Hi Kate,

I agree with Casey, it would be worth putting up with dial-up speed for now. Just temporarily, until broadband reaches you.

The library is another GREAT suggestion.

Studying for Accounting without IC or internet access would be a huge impairment as you study for the exam.

IC and a few internet sites were all I used to prepare, and they served me VERY well.

If I were you, I would move mountains to try to get access to the internet. If not, maybe I could create a zip file out of a bunch of online accounting tutorial pages for you. Of course, you'd need to have access to the internet for me to be able to email them to you. Unless, they will fit on a floppy disk.

I'm just brainstorming a bit with you.

I will be more than happy to help you in any way I can. But honestly...you really should try to get internet access of SOME sort. Anything else should be an option of last resort.

IC and the various web sites are THE way to go. I spent two weeks and countless hours scouring through IC, web tutorials, and looking things up on Wikipedia in order to prepare adequately.

I hope you can find a way to make it happen.

Let me know if I can help,
Snazzlefrag

Thanks Casey and Rob,

Library is a good idea. They are closed by the time I'm off on most days but there is one day a week that would work.

Dial up here(Edit-"here" is a friends house down the street) is pretty slow and inconsistent. (32 Kbps is not unusual.) Apparently that is not abnormal in this neighborhood. The management flashcards that I experimented with weren't tooooo bad but the accounting cards seem to take forever. Maybe there is more to download for those cards. I'm sure that being used to good tools has tweaked my perspective too. Anyway, I'm not usually an impatient type but study time is so limited that I haven't been able to cover very much each night so I'm trying to come with alternatives. IC really does seem like the best prep tool though. Maybe even a little is better than none. I'll keep brainstorming too. Perhaps I will need to shelve the accounting for now and consider a different exam that won't require as much study time for me to prepare.

Thanks again,
Kate

Have you looked into Satelitte? Don't know if you have cable or are on satellite (for your TV), but this might be an option. The upsteams are pretty slow, but downstreams are fairly comparable to DSL. Just be aware, that the weather can, and most times will, affect your connection strength.

Probably not the best interim solution, but thought I would throw it out as a suggestion anyway.

Disclaimer: Under normal circumstances, I would never suggest satellite over cable or DSL, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

I used IC for months on dial and had no real problems. The phone company switched all the lines in our area to digital a few years ago and so I was limited to 28.8 with my provider. It's not ideal and you can't download the latest movie in the background but IC did work.

Thank you B2Manley. I will check out the stalitte situation. Could be useful for other things too.

Dale, thank you too. I experimented at a friend's house and wasn't sure it was worth it for even a month. I wasn't able to get through even one section of cards in an hour and a half which is about how much study time I have weekdays. If I had more time this wouldn't be such a big deal. But if you were able to study with 28.8 and the concensus is that IC is the best of the prep tools then it looks like the best option. This is one of the things that I love about this board! The helpfulness whenever I'm feeling setback. Big Grin

If anyone has used a good text, etc. please still let me know. Neighbors say that you often get bumped off here and I am feeling like I still might need some backup tools.

Thanks again,
Kate

Edit-P.S. I know some of you are stuck without even dial-up sometimes so I hope this isn't coming across whiney. Just trying to come up with the best solution short-term. Ever upward!
