Student Loan Payment Pause
#1
Some people are breathing a bit easier today as the President paused the student loan repayment process for another 90 days.

I am still making my payments, but it’s nice that my interest rate will stay at 0% a little longer. No complaints from me if 100% of my payment goes to the principal!

I'm surprised AOC and her minions are for this policy (and erasing the debt). It's a very regressive tax. The people who went to college get to freeload off of people who did NOT go to college (or who paid their way through, or saved up, or whatever). Since it's proven college degrees make people more well off, why are we helping people with this type of debt again? Why are we punishing people who don't have college degrees?? Not at all progressive...then again, she doesn't actually care about poor people...

This is actually a serious question: is this really what you believe?  Do you spend your mental energy intentionally twisting facts to the point where they essentially become lies?  Are you just parroting things you get from Fox News and InfoWars?

I truly do think that this is a regressive policy.  We are asking people who didn't do something to pay for people who chose to do something, and that many people in the lower socioeconomic levels end up paying for people in upper socioeconomic levels.   (I also think this about having the lottery pay for tuition as well, since more people from lower socioeconomic levels play the lottery, and more kid from upper socioeconomic levels use these "scholarships" to pay for college).

I'm fine with things like Pell Grants and such to actually just pay for people who make less money to go to college, so I'm not against poor people or something.  I just think this is a regressive tax, and more poor people are hurt than helped by it (many more middle-income and higher go to college than poor people, and many more middle-income people take out student loans than poor people).  This doesn't help people who are actually on the lowest socioeconomic rungs (especially ones who have a college degree).

Our low tuition prices on this forum is outside the normal. We're "hacking" the system basically.

In our parents/grandparents time college tuition was 1/10th their wage. Now it can be easily 10x ours.

If you're mad about paying for college/university for others with your taxes, why stop there? Why should I pay for kids to attend high school? I don't have any HS kids. Heck, let's go all the way back to elementary school. You only need to have basic reading & writing skills to get a job flipping burgers. Parents can teach that. Let the rich cover the cost of their own schooling; I don't want to cover the cost of some millionaire's son to take pre-algebra classes.

If college were ACTUALLY free, I am fairly certain that more economically disadvantaged people would take advantage of it. Smarter poor people probably don't take out loans because the penalties for doing so are MUCH higher than for middle class and above.

I'm not mad about paying for some people to go to college.  I just said that I'm ok with Pell Grants, and those are paid for out of taxes.  And I homeschooled my kids for K-8, while paying property taxes to fund the local schools.  I paid cash for every single thing we wanted to do, every bit of curriculum for 9 years, because in spite of the fact that we paid taxes, we got absolutely nothing for it.  Did I complain?  Nope.  I figure that's the price I pay for living in society.

I do think that making everyone pay off student loans is an issue though.  I'm going to guess that a whole heck of a lot of those went to pay for lifestyle and things other than college.  When I was in college, dorms were complete shit, 2 people shared a room, bathroom was down the hall, the furniture was awful.  Now, many dorms are more like high-end apartments, with your own bedroom and bathroom, granite counters, hardwood floors, lazy rivers and steakhouses as a food option. Because you know, they have to "attract" students to the campus.  When you have to bribe kids with outlandish amenities to go to your school, they're not going for the education.  All of it is ridiculous, and helps to make tuition way higher than it needs to be.

I am paying cash for my kid to go to college (except the courses she's taking right this minute due to tuition assistance at work).  But honestly, I should tell her to take out loans, and then hope they get paid off rather than paying for it ourselves.  If I could save the money I plan on paying for her college, that would be awesome.  Maybe we can spend it on a vacation to the Bahamas or something.  Yeah, you should feel good about that.  Because that's what you might be paying for with your tax dollars.  AND, lets not forget that it does absolutely nothing to stop any of this - it won't reduce tuition prices, it won't stop people from taking out loans - so tuition will go up, and even more people will take out loans in the hopes that they get paid off again later.  It's a terrible idea in so many ways.

BTW - you did not address what I said, about it being a regressive tax policy.  Do you not think that the people that make the least money and didn't go to college aren't going to be the ones that end up paying for a share of this - and getting nothing for it?

Also, CA has been offering "free" (taxpayer funded) CC for a while now and has lower enrollment than before the Promise program started.  You'd think people would jump on it, but nope.  Not sure how much is due to Covid, we shall see.  But "free" doesn't mean that people will want to take advantage of it.  Those who were already going to go are happy, but those who weren't going to go anyway...not sure.

We sort of looked inside the Matrix of higher education, figured out how it works, then hacked it.

Anything can be hacked including ACT, SATs, LSAT etc.

I agree with dfrecore.

Plenty of plumbers, truck drivers, HVAC techs, car mechanics, etc that will have to pay for their degrees which is not fair.

I'm not too fond of the idea of the government picking and choosing winners and losers when it comes to government handouts.

and they would have to take remedial classes in college because they are in no way prepared for even the most basic of college classes
