Straightliner, Sailor, Study.com proctored.. any alternatives?
#1
Hello,

So as I have been doing research on different options to complete my degree I have noticed that the many different sites that count as credit have proctored final exams. Are there any other sites that offer non proctored courses? I know Shmoop does but I think TESU pretty much Only accepts the lit courses and they aren't UL. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyways, thanks for the input everyone! This community has helped me tremendously!

Edit: I was wrong. Shmoop does have UL lit courses. That sounds good to me! If only I could complete my entire degree via Shmoop then I would be very happy indeed. I'm not sure why but I have a fairly heavy anxiety over proctored exams. I have failed a couple in college and I often have taken just online courses.

I suppose that is why I am curious if other sites to finish my degree "non-proctored" were an option.

Edit2: It looks like I can complete most if not all of my degree through Shmoop! Fingers crossed. I'll do more research into this! Smile

I've completed Modernist lit, Women's lit and Shakespeare's plays all through shmoop and have confirmed with TESU that they're all UL courses.

As far as I know they accept all the credit courses from Shmoop. On this thread there is this list of 5 upper level lit courses (or at least what TESU considers ul):

Quote:Holocaust Literature (ENG-301)
Literature in the Media (LIT-430)
Modernist Literature (LIT-399)
Shakespeare's Plays (LIT-320)
Women's Literature (LIT-323)

Furthermore, there are the FREE courses and other Shmoop courses other than the Literature ones that are available.

Guess I can do almost if not all my classes through Shmoop!

First, it depends on what degree you want. A business degree cannot be completed at Shmoop. A BALS or BA in English, there are a lot of options.

There is a max though, no matter the degree, and that's 90cr from any single source. So you could do up to 90cr of Shmoop courses, but the rest would have to be done elsewhere.

If you tell me your degree and what courses you've already taken, I can map out a plan for you, using as much Shmoop as possible.

Hello, yes, I am planning on going for a BALS. It's disheartening to hear about the 90cr max, but at least I now know and can plan accordingly. More than likely I'll try to use Shmoop for as much courses as possible (probably majority of the UL courses) and try to CLEP out of the rest using InstantCert (whatever Shmoop doesn't cover/gen eds as I feel they might be easier to CLEP).

Here is a list of courses I have taken at College and grades... hopefully this will help in trying to map a plan for me but maybe not:

1st Semester
----------
113 Old Testament History - 3credits - C
123 Composition 1 - 3 - C
102 Introduction Missions - 2 - C
101 Fitness For Life - 1 - F
102 Foundations for Life - 2 - A-
112 Foundations of Theology - 2 - C

2nd Semester
----------
123 New Testament History - 3credits - B-
112 Strategies for Disciples - 2 - A-
243 Church Reformation - 3 - C
132 Music in Church - 2 - D-
122 Church History and Polity - 2 - B-
113 Personal and Social Adjustment - 3 - B

3rd Semester
---------
102 Public Speaking - 2 - B
103 Western Civilization 1 - 3 - D
203 College Algebra - 3 - F
293 Cultural Anthropology - 3 - D

4th Semester
---------
143 Pentateuch - 3 - D
243 Hermeneutics 1 - 3 - B
203 Composition II - 3 - F
342 Personal Finance in Church - 2 - B-
2053 Biblical Theology - 3 - B-

5th Semester
--------
102 Study Skills - 1 - F
112 Introduction to Psychology - 3 - A-
210 Statistics for Behavioral Sciences - 3 - D+

I have attached an excel doc that davewill made for me which factored my GPA in terms of TESU. Maybe this will help.

Also, I have taken the Institutes Ethics course and was taking ALEKS, but have since had that refunded due to it not being renewed. I just signed up for Shmoop and paid for one month. I can take as many courses as needed this month as I currently have a month of free time to focus just on Shmoop.

My daughter has really bad test anxiety and was really terrified of doing proctored exams (even over the computer web cam). We tested it out first on a course that didn't matter and was cheap. Saylor might be a good place to do this because they are so cheap. The fact that little importance was put on the test helped relieve her anxiety a bit, and gave her time to adjust to the web cam. Now she doesn't even notice it's on once she gets going on a proctored final.

Here is the spreadsheet I made.  Blue is what you already took.  Purple is the Shmoop courses that will fit in each area (science and UL AOS).  Pink is any Shmoop course you can take.

That leaves only 2 courses that you should take via Study.com - English Comp II, and World Religions/A&I Lit/Tech Writing (choose 1 of these 3).  That way, you get the Study.com affiliate membership pricing, saving you about $1000 on the degree.
