Shmoop Literature Courses Overview
#71
If Bible Lit is accepted as non-western lit, does that mean a English degree can be completed at Shmoop?
Do American and Brit lit count as Survey of Literature?
What about Analysis and Interpretation of Literature?

It cannot be completed entirely through Shmoop. There are CLEPs for Analyzing and Interpreting Lit for 6 hours (also takes care of Information Literacy) and either American Lit (6) or British Lit (6). You would only need one of the latter two to meet the survey requirement.
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.
83 hours of ACE-worthy credits

Did I miss something? They're applying Biblical Lit as "non-western??" That seems completely absurd, but good news for potential English majors if true.

It certainly makes the English degree easier to achieve. Unfortunately, I can't CLEP where I am so will probably use the credits for a humanities degree, haven't made my final decision yet. I am enjoying working through the courses though and have completed 4 courses in a little over a week.

Bible as Literature is non-western literature IMO. The first languages it was written in were classic Hebrew and Aramaic. Parts were definitely written in Africa too.

Half of the Bible was written in Koine Greek though and they could argue that was Western (set during the period of Roman rule). But the Old Testament was technically Middle Eastern as it was in Hebrew. I guess it could go either way. It would be nice if it came in as non-western.

I think about 2/3 of the Shmoop course was on the old testament too. If they don't accept it as non-western I think you could put up a good case for an appeal.

Just had my ACE credits reviewed and these are the way those two Shmoop classes came in...
LIT 242 - Biblical Literature 1 for Shmoop's Bible as Literature (did not come over as non-western)
LIT 399 - Special Topics in Liteature for Shmoop's Modernist Literature (it is definitely being applied as an UL class on my degree plan).
LIT 208 - English Literature 1 for Shmoop's British Literature
Hope that helps someone else in their planning and it confirms what a few other people have already posted.
