Seeking UMPI BLS Advice, Efficient Course Selection, Tight Budget
#1
Hello Forum Members,

I hope this message finds you well. I am Tonya, a 39-year-old individual eager to pursue Felician University's Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program. However, with the absence of a bachelor's degree, I am currently navigating suitable degree options.

After careful consideration, I am leaning toward the Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) Management Degree Plan at the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI), a minor in Psychology. Your advice is invaluable to me, especially given my financial constraints and the need for a timely completion. To provide context, my husband is the sole breadwinner, and we are on a tight budget. Consequently, I am hoping to complete the degree within one term to manage costs efficiently.

Important: Apply today as it's the deadline, send in your transcripts, create a spreadsheet of the BLS with a double minor in Management & Psychology by following the info on the WIKI pages. It's a Bachelors with Liberal Studies major, and two minors.

Here's your previous thread if you want to review info in there as well: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...ree--41276

For reference and extra info if you are looking, you may want to review a thread here, especially my last post: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...out-degree

There seems to be some confusion. The major for the BLS is liberal studies - that's the LS in the degree acronym. You can't major in business. You can get a minor in business administration management & leadership. You'd need to confirm with your academic advisor that you can complete the business administration minor as it's not officially offered in YourPace. Same with the psychology minor. You'll need to make sure all of the required courses are available on YourPace. Yes, you can transfer some courses in, but you'll still need to complete all of the minor requirements at UMPI.

Thank you for the clarification. I appreciate the guidance on the major and minors for the BLS program. I'll reach out to my academic advisor to confirm the details and ensure that I can complete the business administration and psychology minors within the YourPace framework. I'll make sure to check the course availability and complete any necessary steps to fulfill the requirements at UMPI. Thanks again for your assistance!

Hello everyone,

I hope you're all doing well. I'm reaching out for some advice on class selection as I aim to complete my courses efficiently and in a timely manner. Considering my current financial situation and the urgency to finish quickly, I'm looking for classes that aren't too extensive. Additionally, I'm hoping to enroll in courses with professors known for promptly grading assignments.

I have attached the degree plan sent to me by Jessica Winslow from UMPI. I've come across positive feedback in degree forums about the helpful guidance provided here, so I'm reaching out for any suggestions or recommendations you might have based on this plan. Swiftly completing my education is crucial for our financial stability as my husband is the sole breadwinner in our household.

I've also attached the pdf's that include the classes I can choose from to this thread

Your assistance and insights would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Tonya

You need to complete a minimum of 10 courses at UMPI. You only have 10 courses left to complete for your degree so take them at UMPI.

My suggestion is to review post #2 and the links within it, just to let you know, you should really get in contact with the academic advisor as there may be discrepancies between what 'advising, alumni, current students, registrar' look for in all requirements.  The was a thread on DegreeForum that mentioned the requirements for a BAS/BLS, the number of credits transferred in each major/minor, UL requirements.

There may have been a change, the link you have attached with your evaluation indicates you have no residency credits completed for the minor at all, these are all elective credits you're transferring in, if that requirement for residency changed recently, you're in great shape, if not - you will need more classes.  To circumvent any issues, you can use the current minor as a second minor and add another to it as your first minor, be it MIS, PM, or Psych.

And to round out those credits, you can do the 3-4 classes that can exempt you from the 3 in the MAOL, you will save on the cash, energy, time if you are ever going to go that route.  It really depends on you and what the advising team tells you, I would get them to verify you can transfer everything into the BLS and only do elective credits!  You don't want to be caught in a change in policy, when final audit comes, you may hit the big road block...

Thanks for the advice! I figured something was off as I asked questions and sought help choosing classes, but Jessica mentioned she couldn't assist in that regard. I'll review post #2, connect with the academic advisor, and navigate this carefully. Checking the DegreeForum thread for insights and considering your suggestions for minors and exempting from MAOL requirements is on my radar. I appreciate your guidance!

Hi

I hope this message finds you well. I recently received clarification from Jessica at UMPI regarding the residency requirements for my degree. According to Jessica, to meet residency requirements at UMPI a student must:

1. Complete at least 30 credit hours of study through UMPI for a baccalaureate degree.
2. Ensure that at least 12 of these credits are in the major, with at least 9 of the 12 being at the upper level (300-level or above).
3. For two-year degree programs, complete 15 credits at UMPI.

Jessica emphasized that in the BLS program, the major includes both the major and the 24 credits of upper-level courses, even if no courses are taken from the minor.

Now, that Ive met all the requirements, I am in the process of choosing electives from the catalogs I posted the other day, and I'm unsure about which ones to choose. Could you please provide any advice or insights on selecting electives that align well with my degree and career goals?

Given my budget constraints and the fact that I am covering the costs without financial aid assistance, my primary focus is on expediting the process.

I am not inclined to pursue another minor and am solely interested in the most efficient route to fulfill residency requirements and complete the necessary elective credits.

Your guidance is highly valued, and I appreciate your assistance.

Thank you,Tonya

I've never taken any classes at UMPI and it's very subjective for people who have taken the classes... For starters, I still suggest the 3-4 MAOL classes just in case down the road, you want that MAOL at UMPI.  There goes 3 of the classes out of 10... You then round them out with the other set of classes from recommendations on the UMPI Class Review Master Thread: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...ter-Thread
