Second Depth Requirement
#1
I am told that I need to complete a second "Depth requirement" and that these courses may be covered by some that I have already taken in other area.

Does anyone know the scoop on the 2nd depth requirement? I am under the impression that I must have another 12 units in an area that is not my major, but that these classes do not have to be in addition to those that I have already taken if that makes any sense.

Does anyone know about this?????

My degree is in Criminal Justice and I have 7 units in business. I plan to make my 2nd depth a business depth by taking another 5 units. Will this work???

Thanks,Cool

Hi ImustStudy,

Your first depth is already covered by your major (but those who are not declaring a major have to ensure they meet the TWO depth requirements).

Your second depth can be Business. Just make sure you have at least three UPPER level credits in the mix.

A depth is simply a grouping of 12 credits in one single subject, and three of those credits must be upper level. The depths (as their names suggest) ensure that Excelsior graduates have more than just an introductory knowledge of at least two of the subjects they have studied as part of their degree. For that reason, I think depths are a good thing.

Since you have already got a depth in Criminal Justice covered as part of your major, you now need one more depth. As I said, you just need to make sure you have at least 12 credits, and that three of those are upper level.

I don't know which credits you have already earned, but you may find that you have already completed a second depth. History, Psychology, Economics, Sociology, Math, English, Computer Science, Music, Art, etc., can all count as depths. If you have 12 credits in pretty much ANY single subject (and three of those are UL), then it will likely count as a second depth.

Also, there are no specific course requirements within each depth. They don't care what the course titles are as long as they are all in the same subject.

Hope that helps,

Rob,

Thanks for the help.

I have 7 units in my second depth area, business. Figure it easiest to finish up in that area.

I noticed that you are completing 2 degrees at the same time. Do you have to declare that? Is it difficult to do two?

Hi ImustStudy,

Completing two degrees is all about meeting the requirements for BOTH majors. In my case, I was working busily towards earning a BS in Psychology and suddenly realized that, in the process, I had fulfilled quite a few of the requirements for a Business degree. So I decided I would try to complete both degrees.

The down side is that I flew passed the 120 credit mark without earning either degree yet. I am a few credits away from completing both degrees.

For a second degree, the rules are that you must meet all requirements for the second degree, and you must have 30 'new' credits beyond those used for your first degree. So if you have extra credits towards your first degree, you would want to hold them off the transcript so that they can be considered 'new' credits for your second degree.

In my case, I am almost done with my business degree now. So I will go for that one first. But I will request that Excelsior keep all my Psych credits off the Business degree transcript. Then, at a later date, I will apply those Psych credits towards the 30 new credits required for my second degree (along with additional Psych courses/exams I plan to take).

In addition, I have made sure that, as I have progressed, I have included as many corollary requirements for BOTH degrees as possible (Eg, Ethics, Statistics, Organizational Behavior, etc.).

Make sense?

Hope that helps,

So would you say that if I meet the requirements of the Criminal Justice Degree, I could then go and take 30 more "new" units and get the Liberal Arts degree as well? I would think to take the CJ degree first since the Liberal Arts requirements are more general and seem more easily obtained IMHO.

It sounds like you have spoken to someone at EC and know that they are flexible with moving/holding of credits from transcripts. Is that right? Will they remove credits that are unneeded and let you use them on a 2nd degree? Do you have to pay all the fees again? What costs are involved?

I have a "D" that I would like to replace with an "A" once I repeat the course to raise my GPA. Can I do that if I have already been awarded my AS?

I just got an email today from my EC advisor that says I already have 9 units in Political Science and just need 3 more UPPER level courses to finish the depth. She also said that I can kill 2 birds with one stone if I work it right and can use the depth credit as a General Ed requirement that I need as well.

I just noticed that while reading the new Excelsior policies for 2008, they said clearly, " YOu only have 1 Excelsior transcript." Will that effect you getting a 2nd degree????

I would like to do the same as you.

Hi ImustStudy,

It is very normal for colleges to only maintain ONE transcript for you (it would be too confusing otherwise). If you complete a second degree, they will simply add the additional thirty new credits to your transcript, and declare that a second degree was granted, when it was granted, and what the major was.

You will, however, receive a separate second diploma to hang on your wall beside your first degree.

Hope that helps,

This is similar to what I was wondering about, and its pretty neat how 30 credits from FEMA can be transferred into the BSLS program.

I believe that the Criminal Justice degree is offered under the auspices of the School of Liberal Arts. As a result, you would not be able to get a CJ degree AND a BSLS degree since both degrees are awarded by the same school within Excelsior. One of the stipulations for a second degree is that it cannot be awarded by the same school as your first degree.
