Searching for info on online teaching certification for higher ed
#1
Does anyone know what specific certification colleges are requiring faculty to have? I read in this Chronicle article today that Morehouse is furloughing all faculty that have not been certified to teach online. I searched for online teaching certifications and found everything from non-credit certificates, graduate certificates, graduate degrees, and even certificates given by online meeting software companies but I'm thinking most of these are not what is actually required.

I'm interested in hearing from anyone who is an adjunct that knows what programs/certificates colleges are accepting or requiring.

You're not getting much of a response because there is no single answer to your question.  Every school has different standards and policies.  Your local community college will have different standards than MIT.  Typically, for a tenure-track faculty job you're going to need a PhD or some credential that is roughly equivalent.  Are there exceptions?  Of course, but it's a very competitive market and so minimum qualifications will rarely even get you an interview.  Taking a course to teach online is not a big deal.  They're not hard to find.  If you feel the need to try to impress someone then you can try this:

The answer, as happens often, is "it depends." Every school is different. There is no single answer that will give you what you're looking for. There's probably not even 2 or 3 answers, so we can't really generalize. Your best option is to look at a bunch of colleges that you're interested in teaching at, and see what they require (and even then, it will probably depend on what subject you're wanting to teach). Another option is to look at even more schools, and try to see a trend line. Last, you can look at a bunch of schools, and then go with the highest requirement, which will then insure that you've done the most you can and can teach at the most number of schools.
