SDC proctor tips?
#1
I’m going to be finishing my first Study.com class soon. I had a terrible experience with the proctor for my CLEP exam and want to be prepared. I’m sure things like multiple monitors aren’t allowed (my set up has these, so I realize I’ll have to take them down). But my CLEP proctor also made me remove my heavy printer from my desk and empty my desk drawers, both huge inconveniences that weren’t mentioned in their guidelines. Are the proctor rules with SDC like this? I plan to take several SDC classes so I may need to consider taking the exams somewhere other than my home office. I can’t keep dismantling my office for each of these tests.

There's no proctor, only a reviewer after the fact:

While there's no proctor to make you do a bunch of stuff, there's also nobody to correct you when you do something that could invalidate your test. I've never had a problem, but I've been very careful. I took all my tests in an empty room, keeping my head/body still, etc.

I've never had a problem with an SDC exam either. I've taken exams at a desk with drawers and didn't get penalized for not opening the drawers and showing that they were empty. Make sure the desktop is clean (except for pencil/paper, when allowed) and the walls don't have any printed text materials hanging on them (obvious posters, paintings, or photographs are fine). For the printer, I'd make sure that it's unplugged and the cables are piled obviously on top - I don't think they'll care about it either way, though. Pan the room very slowly when doing the scan. Mine always wind up being 3-5 minutes long, which is agonizingly slow. But it also helps to ensure that, for instance, the mirror behind me isn't mistaken for another person in the room. Make sure to show both sides of your blank paper (when applicable).

Try not to worry too much about it. They're much less uptight than live proctors are.

I followed the SDC rules in the link above.

Probably wasn't needed, but I also tossed sheets over the bookcases, printers and stuff on floor. and even closed the blinds. This covered everything and only took a few minutes to set up for me.

didn't have any problems with it.

sounds crazy with the clep proctor. Be sure to send feedback to college board/clep about that stuff.

I definitely will! I’ve taken proctored exams before and have never once been asked to open my drawers. It felt very extra and tad bit violating. There was nothing mentioned about drawers on the guidelines so I was very taken aback. I considered cancelling but really just wanted to get it over with.

I took my exams on a laptop in a dark kitchen. No issues.

The only thing that I was asked to do afterwards, was to send a picture of my identification using some specific software/app/website, because my built-in webcam didn´t have much resolution.

Since then, I bought an independent webcam and never had any issue again.

They don't use proctors anymore, they just record the session now. It's easy

Not specified in the rules was the fact that my CLEP proctor additionally forced me clear my desk drawers and transfer my hefty printer off my desk. Is this how the rules work with the SDC proctor? As I want to enroll in many SDC courses, I may have to find an other testing location. I can't afford to completely rearrange my workplace every time we do a test. driving directions

I threw towels over my spare monitor(s) - and made sure they're powered off.  Never had an issue with SDC proctoring doing this (did this with other proctoring options as well, no issues).  Random post-it notes, or bulletin board items in background (not related to exam or topic) have caused more trouble...

SDC is a breeze if you follow the directions. I have dual monitors and just turned off the 2nd monitor (actually did the same with CLEP's ProctorTrack as well). I've never had anyone ask about drawers or bookcases. I do have a bunch of messy inboxes stacked up on my desk, so I just threw a sheet over them prior to signing on.

From reading the posts here, it seems like ProctorTrack proctors are completely erratic in what they allow and ask for, and many go way beyond the written CLEP guidelines. This, along with their kludgy software, makes the CLEP proctoring thing a huge pain in the ass, and I do not understand why they have not dumped them for someone competent, but it is what it is.

SDC, on the other hand, neither I nor the several other folks I know who have used them have ever had an issue.
