Rosetta Stone
#11
I would just download Rosetta on bittorrent, it's readily available. Not exactly legal but seriously, who cares?

If your not familiar with how to use bittorrent to download movies and programs I guarantee you know someone who is. A friend, a friends kid, or the office computer guy.

If you are looking for something free and basic- check out the website of the BBC-British Broadcasting. They offer great basic instruction in many languages, and its very entertaining too! If nothing else, it would be a good place to practice and review.

Drummerboy Wrote:Also, Rosetta Stone only teaches grammar by immersion. This means that you will have to "figure out" how to conjugate the verbs. I would read a book on grammar before you take it! Quick Start Spanish is a fun book to teach you the fundamentals of grammar. Then, you might try Cliff's Quick Review Spanish I and Spanish II. These books are a big help to understanding the structure of the language.

I would say that if your goal is to pass the CLEP, probably go with Spain Spanish. I noticed that my Latin American version does not teach the second person plural "vosotros" form of conjugating verbs because most Latin American speakers do not use it. However, this form will be important with reading such things as the Bible and other books. Spain, Venezuela, and I think Honduras also use this form.

You might consider taking a trip to a Spanish speaking country before the CLEP. I am hoping to do this. Wish you well!

Good tips. I use studyspanish.com for my grammar learning, and spanishdict.com also has some lessons and a good learning community but so far I've mainly used it for a quick translator.

I say pick whatever dialect that you think will be most applicable. If you use Rosetta for practicing pronunciation and accent, you will end up with either a Latin American or Spanish accent depending on which one you use, so keep that in mind.

Another good website: Learning Languages It has a very good overview of different languages, if you wanted an opinion on German or French or something. My opinion is that if you live in the USA, why would you learn anything but Spanish? With a little more work you can learn Portuguese too, and now the entirety of the New World is open to you!

That's a good point about accent. The Spain accent is different than the Latin American accent. The accent I have picked up from my Mexican friends is even different than what Rosetta offers in Latin American. For example, Mexicans seem to pronounce "ll" as a "j" sound in English. They also pronounce their b's and v's like b's rather than as a mix like Rosetta Stone's speakers. I imagine the Spain accent is quite different, too.

This source says that 98% of all students who use their materials pass their CLEP Test, they also have specific subject areas. They say that you can acquire up to 50 credit hours, and that you can skip a full year of college with credit. The packages they have include flashcards to maximize study time. If you want information on these sources email me at brownchriswayne@yahoo.com and in the subject area of the email write (increase test score, and grade sources). I will email you what I have.
