Honestly, smart to hold onto the oil. While we do know oil isn't the best way to do things, but, our economy isn't yet ready to shed oil. We'll still need it for plastic, etc. Oil still has an incredibly long several decade to another century or more on this earth.

Outside US, KAUST (King Abdullah Univ. Science and Tech) is among the wealthiest university in oil-rich country Saudi Arabia with $20B endowment, with that much endowment every student in KAUST enjoy free tuition, generous living allowance, on campus housing etc.

KAUST was briefly talked about on this and the sister board. I don't know much about their programs and how they're structured... but what drew me to them was exactly what was mentioned in post #3 above by sialiblo.

Perhaps it's not surprising that the list of the Top 50 Richest Universities is dominated by the US.  I'm suspicious of the data that goes into creating these lists, if for no other reason than the endowment numbers are changing daily.

Crazy to think many universities are essentially tax free hedge funds. Higher ed is really broken.
