Review on study.com Personal Finance
#11
npm2486 Wrote:I've been a member here for a while, but this is my first post. I'm grateful for all the info on this forum and I just want to give back.
I have been awarded the Guardian/study.com scholarship (https://study.com/blog/guardian-s-person...rship.html) and I'm able to take study.com courses for three months. I can take whatever courses I want, but the first course had to be Personal Finance and I finished it today. This will be a basic review, but if anyone is interested in a detailed review, I have no problem doing so.

So it took me about a week and a half to complete the course. I could have finished it in about 3 days, but I procrastinated a bit. Anyone who has experience with home/car buying, investments, or has really good financial management skills can probably complete this class in a day. I don't have much experience outside of having some basic bank accounts and a car loan, so it took a bit more effort on my part.

I completed all the quizzes with 100% scores and I took the practice final exam twice. I got a 93% both times. I took the final exam and it was harder than the practice exams. Where the practice final exam was simply 45 questions taken from the previously taken quizzes, the 100 question final included about 3 questions from the quizzes. I feel like you need to have a good grasp of the concepts. There are study flash cards at the end of the course that would probably be great preparation for the final. Since I scored so high twice on the practice exams, I didn't go over them. I only read through my notes once.

I have not received my score, yet. I think it may take up to two weeks. I'm a little nervous because there were several questions that I did not know the answer to. I will definitely go over the flashcards next time, and make sure that I know most of the bolded terms in the lessons inside and out. I was a little over confident because the quizzes were so easy.

Once I get my score, I'll update and maybe give tips on what to focus on for the final.

Do you need a calculator for this exam?

The site says that you can use a scientific, non graphing calculator and a scrap piece of paper. I didn't need them though. There were only two or three problems that included math and I did those in my head.

On the scholarship it doesn't allow you to purchase additional exams for the $70, we can purchase a pay account with the scholarship accounting and get 4 per month.

Last I heard they were planning on making changes regarding this. It doesn't look like they decided to add the $70 extra exam feature to scholarships. I made the argument that I would be taking additional exams if they were made available to not take a few SL courses but that didn't seem to motivate them.

Thank you for sharing, I thought the small quizzes were all I needed I guess Ed Portal has had more than a name change! So do I need a proctor for the exam or just do it online, any idea about time limits regarding the test? Do they supply the Proctor or do I have to source them myself
Don't forget that gaining college credit by taking exams is one of the reason's we're here. That's mainly possible through the flashcards made available by the owner of this forum : InstantCert Plus of course your hard work in learning and reviewing

Yeah, I guess they rather say no to my money. If I were running Study.com I would be trying to process everyone who wants additional exams, scholarship or not. If you can't code it into the site for some reason, then simply process it manually over the phone. I don't see how saying "no" makes any sense. But ok lol. I still like Study.com

You still might be able to take advantage of Study.com, but using the materials to study for an outside exam. For instance, you could use it to study for Management and Marketing, and then go take the CLEP exams (if it's cheaper for you to do that) or take the Saylor exams (for which study material isn't always great).

The proctor service is provided by study.com, you take it in your own home with a laptop camera. All the info is provided on the website.
