Requesting Feedback on my Degree Plan
#1
I am looking into attending UMPI for a BLS with a minor in Management Information Systems. I have two prior associate's degrees from community colleges in Maine (one in liberal arts and another in radiography) as well as a handful of credits from one of the UMaine universities. I am trying to find the best way to apply my transfer credits so I can figure out if there's anything else I need to take before applying to UMPI so I don't have issues transferring the credits in. Duplicate transfer credits are in orange.

UMPI BLS Plan
General Electives (62)
All getting transferred in.

GEC (40)
1A. Complete (Transferring in ENG 101)
1B. Take at UMPI (ENG 121) - 3
1C. Complete (Transferring in BUS 110)
1D. Complete (Transferring in ENG 101)
2A. Complete (Transferring in PSY 100)
2B. Complete (Transferring in SOC 100)
2C. Take at UMPI (ENG 121)
2D. Complete (Transferring in ART 251)
2E. Complete (Transferring in ENG 151)
3A. Complete (Transferring in MAT 101)
3B. Complete (Transferring in MAT 117)
3C. Complete (Transferring in BIO 112)
3D. Take at UMPI (PHY 153) - 3
3E. Complete (Transferring in BIO 261)
4A. Take at UMPI (FYS 100) - not sure if I need to take this since I am a transfer student? - 1
4B. Take at UMPI (ENG 121)
4C. Complete (Transferring in PHI 152)
5A. Complete (Transferring in SOC 100)
5B. Complete (Transferring in HTY 115)
5C. Complete (Transferring in SPA 101)
5D. Take at UMPI (SWK 202) - 3
5E. Take at UMPI (POS 101) - 3

Management Information Systems Minor (18)
BUS 141 Take at UMPI - 3
BUS 200 Take at UMPI 3
BUS 244 Take at UMPI 3
BUS 245 Take at UMPI 3
BUS 345 Take at UMPI 3
BUS 440 Take at UMPI 3

Credits taken at UMPI: 18 Minor, 13 GEC [31 Total]

Something that concerns me is that I saw on this wiki page that you have to take at least 24 upper level electives through UMPI as well that are separate from the GEC requirements (mentioned in the "Requirements for UMPI" section)? Is that true? If so, maybe I would be better off taking the minor requirements via Sophia or study.com and I could do more electives through UMPI to satify the 30 credit minimum. Any advice would be appreciated. I've been working on this for most of the day.

What you actually need to do is list the courses you've taken so that we can see what those are.  For instance, I don't know what BUS 110 is, so I can't tell you another option for a course without knowing the course name.  List them like this:

School A
Course #, full course name, number of credits, grade if less than a C
list any pertinent info like whether science course has a lab, or if the course is UL if it's not clear from the course #

Then, we can help you figure out what's left to take, and where you can get it cheaply

-------------------------------------------------------

A few things I can tell you:

1) if your Bio science course had a lab, then you can take Environmental Science at Sophia and be done.  If your Bio science course did not have a lab, then you'll probably want to take a Bio lab course at Study.com, plus Environmental Science at Sophia.

2) Intro to Ethics via Sophia

3) American Government through ICC

4A is completed at UMPI. Everyone has to complete the YourPace Orientation. It's 0 credits and takes about an hour to complete.

5D You can't take that course as it's not offered in YourPace. They have a class available you'll complete instead.

Also where are the credits coming from? A list of where they're from really helps so we can tell you if they will actually transfer in for what you think they will transfer in for.

Yes for the BLS you'll need to complete 24 UL credits outside of the minor and GEC. You need to complete the majority of these credits at UMPI as well.

I attached a pdf to my original post because it's a lot of credits and I think it's easier to read the way I have it formatted on Sheets. I had to go through 3 transcripts and put all my credits through the Mainstreet course equivalent program to see how things would count at UMPI.

I have taken Intro to Bio with a lab and Anatomy and Physiology I & II with lab for each. I'm not sure which classes count as upper level since it is a new term to me. I googled it but I don't recall which courses in particular had prerequisites, sorry.

Hi, thank you for the info. I attached a pdf to my original post with all the credits and where they came from etc. That's fine if I can't take that 5D course; I just picked one of the few listed for that objective, but it doesn't matter to me if I have to take something else.

Okay, I'm a little confused about that because I thought that you only had to take 30 credits total through UMPI, but if you count those UL credits too, is it actually the 30 PLUS half or more of the 24 UL credits? Please have patience with me; I am autistic and have a hard time comprehending things like this because the amount of information is overwhelming to me. I'm doing my best to understand fully before I apply and get locked in.

This plan is similar to all the BLS degrees.
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...egree_Plan

General Ed:
You would need to take English Comp II UMPI
Sophia Environmental Science works for 3D
Instantcert American Government 5E

MIS Core Requirements:
Study.com BUS 244: Management Information Systems
Study.com BUS 345: Database Management Systems

24cr UL Requirements
Sophia Business Law
Study.com Any UL course
Take 5 or 6 UL courses UMPI

You do only have to take 30 credits with UMPI. If you plan things out correctly, that should be all you have to take though a few more courses are ok.

Are you trying to make the May start date at UMPI?  If so then maybe just do Sophia Environmental Science, Business Law, and Instantcert American Government.
Degrees: BA Computer Science, BS Business Administration with a concentration in CIS, AS Natural Science & Math, TESU. 4.0 GPA 2022.
Course Experience:  CLEP, Instantcert, Sophia.org, Study.com, Straighterline.com, Onlinedegree.org, Saylor.org, Csmlearn.com, and TEL Learning.
Certifications: W3Schools PHP, Google IT Support, Google Digital Marketing, Google Project Management

The GEC in the catalog is for on campus students. There isn't one available to YourPace students. Once you're a student you'll have access to an academic advisor who will let you know what your options are for that course. You can also take Introduction to Ethics from Sophia and transfer it to UMPI. American Government can be completed on InstantCert and transferred.

30 is the MINIMUM number of credits you have to complete at UMPI. The ULs count in the 30 credits.

One thing to note....the transfer database is how courses have transferred in the past. It's not completely up to date or 100% accurate. That pale green font is almost impossible to read. Looks like you already have an UL course from the University of Southern Maine.

Thank you so much; that is very helpful. Okay, so I should strategize the way I suggested in my original post then and try to do most of the MIS requirements somewhere else and get some UL credits via UMPI? Seems like the most logical thing to do.

I'm not sure when I can start. I would really like to do the May start date, but I might have to wait until the next session because my husband and I are trying to buy a house right now and I'm not sure I can afford to throw that much money at something other than our housing endeavor at the moment. I might just focus on the Sophia and study.com classes I can knock out for now since it isn't as much money up front. I just applied for financial aid in the offchance they offer me a grant, so we will see what happens.

Oh I see. I figured it might not be identical, but thought it would be similar enough that I could work out what might transfer. I don't understand why they don't have one available for YourPace. Alright, I am going to look into those, thank you.

I didn't realize that before so thanks for bringing it up. I apologize for the font; it looked fine on my monitor so I didn't know Sad Alright, well that is good!

All you need to take is American Government (ICC) and Environmental Science (Sophia). You will take English Comp II at UMPI, and then the minor. Since you need 30cr at UMPI, I would consider taking a 2nd minor (either PM or Mgmt) or even both of those, since there's a lot of overlap.

If you're considering that, I'd probably take Communication at Work at Sophia, since I think that works as Business Comm for the Mgmt minor, since you have Sophia anyway (double-check me on that though). That would leave 13 courses at UMPI in the 3 minors. You could take a month at SDC to do a couple of courses as LevelUP suggested to put you at 11 courses.

Welcome to the board!  Just curious, what was the two associates in? AS Radiography? AA Liberal Studies?  AAS Career Studies?  Is there a specific UMPI BLS minor you want besides the MIS?  For the UL requirements, if you don't have enough UL, you can always get another additional minor.

The reason I am asking is because the requirements for each degree has discrepancies: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid363249
You also want to read about the 18/24 credit requirements here for the minor, link: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid363613

All this stuff is confusing even for people that went through the process, so don't beat yourself up if you don't understand some things.

You have a good plan. A few tweaks will make things easier.

You will be a college graduate soon. That degree is there waiting for you. You'll also likely graduate from UMPI with honors (3.5 GPA or better)!
