Replacing credit; Excelsior College

Had a question for any Excelsior students that have experience with this.

I have 6 credits from when I went to college right after high school. They are both Humanity credits; a total of 6.

Comm 101 intro to speech I got a D.

And Arts 100 I got a C.

I want to take the 6 credit Humanity clep. Can I replace those two grades above with the humanity clep? I want to improve my GPA and can't let that "D" ride on my transcript. Any info would be appreciated.

Shouldn't be a problem. I replaced a D in English Comp with new credit. Make sure to double check with your advisor though.

Excelsior only awards pass/fail credit for the clep general exams, so it will not effect your GPA. So go ahead and challenge the test. I would definately delete the "D" though.
When you get all your credits in and you are getting ready to graduate, figure your GPA with and without the ARTS "C". If it is beneficial keep it, if it is decreases your GPA chunk it...
As always, confirm with an advisor.

Sorry, Casey. You are going to do great when you do take it though. It is amazing how some years of life experience really helps with these subjects. At least that's the way its looking so far.

If you are going to Excelsior, you don't need ANY speech credits. You can absolutely surpress the speech credits ALTOGETHER and take something else to replace the missing credits.

I am wondering why your advisor would say that to you. I'd get a second opinion.

Numerous people have stated that they were easily able to remove 'bad' credits from their Excelsior transcript and replace them with higher grades via exams.

Please don't accept this advisor's response as your final answer.

I will call back and get a second opinion. But what she basically said was that in order to replace the speech credit I would have to take a similar course and not just any exam. So I would have to take a speech related exam to replace this one. Im wondering if they can just take it off completely and Ill just take a clep to get those 3 humanities credits.

Yes, that's what I mean.

You don't want to specifically replace the speech credits with new speech credits (but with a better grade). You simply want to suppress the grade altogether.

Once the grade has been suppressed, you will need to make up the three lost credits. But, since "speech" is not a required subject, this can be done by taking any other exam you choose (as long as it fits your degree plan).

Definitely call them back and see if clarifying your intention helps.

Hmm...I thought you were required to have ALL of your college-lvl classes on your transcript count towards your GPA (otherwise failed classes wouldn't count at all would they)? Exams aren't required to be on your transcipt though so I wouldn't think those would be a problem...but if it's an actual class, I think you're stuck with it. It just doesn't seem like you could 'just not count' grades received...otherwise, GPA would be awhole lot easier to maintain IMHO.

You might be onto something there.

The suppression and replacement of grades at Excelsior might only apply to exams. In that case, it's highly possible that course grades can only be replaced with an equivalency exam in the exact same subject.

I hadn't thought of that.
