Questions about Study.com
#1
Hi all,

Does anyone have any information on Study.com? I am looking at purchasing a subscription for two courses, possibly three. The courses I am looking at taking are:

  1. Lifespan Development/ Human Growth and Development
  2. Industrial/ Organizational Psychology
  3. Project Management

Can anyone advise on the difficulty of these courses and how long, in total these would taken given what others users have said about them? How do these compare to other courses on Study.com?

I finished Project Management in about a week. It's considered UL, so there's a project involved. Basically a hypothetical situation where you've been given 3 interns to plan and execute a party of sorts for the company's customers. You have to make a slide deck with your plans to present to the board of directors.

I generally try to avoid giving estimates since difficulty and time to completion is always subjective depending on each person's prior knowledge, dedication and focus, reading speed, analysis ability, and which other courses have been taken that overlap. It's generally a bad idea to go off anyone else's experiences.

That said, I completed Human Growth and Development in 4-5 days at 4-8 hours per day, but I'd already completed Psychology 101 so there was a bit of overlap to give me a head start on the quizzes.

I haven't found any of the Psychology courses to be that difficult, but I am generally pretty good at memorizing stuff and making connections between concepts, as long as it isn't math-related. The biggest hurdle I found was remembering all the psychology theorists and which theory they were connected with. I also took Social Psychology which gave me a bunch of overlap with Organizational Psychology, so I assume those two are pretty similar.

Great, thank you. This is helpful information. Do you receive an instant score after you complete the final exam and how do these exams compare to that of the CLEP in terms of difficulty?

Yes SDC gives you an instant score at the end of your proctored final. CLEP doesn't have a corresponding project management or organizational psych test so it's hard to say how they would compare. The best way to make a test easier for any platform (clep, DSST, SDC, etc) is to adequately prepare by studying, reviewing, doing practice tests, etc.

Great, thank you. One last question, do the quiz grades factor into your final grade for credit granting purposes? In other words, does it make a difference if you get 80% on the quizzes for 100%?

Yes it makes a difference. If you only scored 80% on every single quiz that would contribute 80 points toward your total grade. If you aced every quiz it would contribute 100 points. The class grade total is 300 points. It makes sense to retake the quiz immediately to get 100% since it will usually show you where the answer is. Plus it's all still fresh in your head.

Okay, so if acing the quizzes is 100 points, the final is 200 and you need a 70% to pass then that means you only need a total score of 210, correct? If that is the case, how many questions can you miss on the final?

Correct. The final is generally 100 questions. Math finals are generally 70 questions. Take note that the UL SDC courses(like the project management course) also have 1 or more assignments that contribute to 1/3 of the total grade or 100 points.

You generally need 55% on the final to pass if you get 100% on the quizzes. Assuming its a lower-level course that doesn't require a project or paper. As MNomadic mentions, the final exams are usually 100 multiple-choice questions, which means if you get at least 55 of them correct, that is enough to pass the course with 100% on the quizzes.
