AP study guides vs. CLEP study guides
#1
Do you think there is a problem with using AP study guides to study for CLEP tests?

I am currently studying for the Principles of Microeconomics CLEP and I have not found many good study guides for the material. (REA doesn't look very comprehensive and all of the Pass Your Class materials look absolutely worthless.) I am thinking about using Princeton's Cracking the AP Economics Macro & Micro Exams, by David Anderson.

Is this a good move, or does anyone have any suggestions for helpful CLEP microecon study guides? Thanks.

Personally, I've found the AP-targeted guides to be a better study source for CLEPs than the CLEP-targeted guides. Overall, on the the ones I've compared, the AP-targeted guides go into better detail, which reduces the amount of additional Wiki searches needed to get a good handle on the items that are likely to show up on the CLEPs. Also, for both the Macro and Micro Econ CLEPs, the Barron's Business Review Library Economics book has a wealth of concise info. Macro and Micro Econ are on my 'next up' list, right after I get Nat. Sci. and Org. Behavior out of the way; the AP Econ and Barron's are what I'm using to prepare for both of them. Cheers!

the "cracking the AP" series is awesome for most of the clep exams. Pick them up at your local library.

I would agree- you'll be on target with AP as long as you match the exam. One thing to watch for, some AP exams are broken down differently- like in AP, US History is one subject. In CLEP, US History is 2 subjects. In that case, the AP history might not be as in depth, but that doesn't exclude it as a valuable source.
I would just suggest going to the college board web site and looking at the % breakdown for the exam content you are doing and compare it to the table of contents in your test prep book.

Hi,
I had a hard time finding a study guide for Intro to Macro and came across several of the AP guides at my library. Using only 2 AP guides to Micro/Macro and IC, I just nailed the Macro test. So, yes, I think (perhaps somewhat biasedly) that the AP guides are a great resource -- especially for economics.

Good luck,
Kelly
