Purdue University Global - BA IT Bunch of Changes
#1
There were quite a few changes and updates to the degree plan.
  • W3Schools PHP cert now only comes in as IN253 (5cr vs 35cr+ before)
  • Removed Study.com courses that were expired
  • Sophia's Intro to Networking works for IT273 Networking Concepts
  • Study.com Computer Science 109: Introduction to Programming works for iN256
The best way to do this degree would probably be to go for the IT Management concentration, then get the Azure Fundamentals cert and one other course to meet the objective.  (Maybe Sophia's Python programming will work)

Then you can skip doing CompTIA Security+ & CompTIA A+.
Degrees: BA Computer Science, BS Business Administration with a concentration in CIS, AS Natural Science & Math, TESU. 4.0 GPA 2022.
Course Experience:  CLEP, Instantcert, Sophia.org, Study.com, Straighterline.com, Onlinedegree.org, Saylor.org, Csmlearn.com, and TEL Learning.
Certifications: W3Schools PHP, Google IT Support, Google Digital Marketing, Google Project Management

Disappointed, but not completely surprised from my PUG conversations, that the W3Schools cert was cut all the way back to IN253. It never should have been 35 credits worth -- IN253 plus IN257 would have probably been more reasonable than what it used to be. Hopefully they start reviewing any of the certs I've worked ahead on for graduate credit in November...

Because I asked, I know that IT244 will not work for IT Management (Sophia Python) -- I'm told it's because it's a three-credit class rather than five or six. You could do Project+ (not a hard cert -- I passed it in about a week), which would give you IT401 -- which will work for the IT Management concentration -- as well as not needing to do Sophia for IT301.

Well, too bad Python doesn't work.

Would Study.com Computer Science 110: Introduction to Cybersecurity work? It comes in as IT104 Introduction to Cybersecurity.

Sophia is on the semester schedule thus courses are 3 credits. PUG is on the quarter schedule system so most of their classes are 5 credits. They accept many courses from Sophia so it doesn't make sense that they're not accepting a course because it's not 5 credits.

With the changes done to the PUG degree requirements and the way they accept certificates, it'll be harder to complete but still doable. Gone are the days when almost 1/3 of the degree almost would be complete with just a couple of certs, they're cracking down on the number of credits you can accumulate with just one of these certs.

To clarify: PUG accepts Sophia for IT244. However, IT244 is three credits (whether through Sophia or not), and all the courses for the IT Management concentration need to be five or six credits.

I'm guessing not, because they rejected my Azure cert credit for IT222: Introduction to Cloud Computing because they said I couldn't use an introductory class for the IT Management requirements. (And I didn't need the credit otherwise.)

With the PHP cert, it did feel like entering a cheat code. It took me 4 hours to get that cert which is worth 6 courses or 34cr. Who gets 6 courses worth of college credit in a day?

The AWS Solutions Associate was worth 66 credits or 11 courses (10cr now). That's not an entry-level cert, and based on feedback, that would take 80 to 160 hours to pass, depending on how efficiently you study and your previous knowledge.

There's still good value in the Google certs since they are free and no risk of failing them.

I wonder if any of the TADA Google certs will work?

This brings back memories of the good old days of IDDQD and IDKFA.

Sophia courses convert from the semester system to the quarter system (just like any other course would do): multiply 3cr x 3/2 = 4.5qcr.  But they generally just round up and bring in 3cr courses as 5qcr; and I know this because my daughter goes there, and transferred in tons of credit including a Sophia course, and they gave her a rounded up amount of credits for every course she brought in.  You can also see that they give it 4.5qcr here: https://purdueglobal.sophia.org/?_gl=1*1.....#courses

So no, the person who told you that info is wrong.

There's probably another reason entirely that it won't work for that degree; I'm going to guess, based on the equivalency that they gave the course, that it's because it's a smidge lower level than the course they require for the degree, and that it just doesn't meet the requirements of the course.  Simple as that.
