Hello everyone,
I am new to the boards and fairly new to CLEP. I have only taken one CLEP test and that was US History II which I passed with a 61 on March 13th.
My test included a lot of very abstract questions about cultural influences during the period (authors, poets, artist etc...along with the usual stuff I guess) In fact there was so many off beat questions in the first 20 that I wondered if I was taking the right test!
My advice for actually taking the test is this....
1) Immediately skip any/all questions that you labor over, are too long to read, or include the word "except". Since this test is timed you want to answer the easiest ones first. You can always go back afterward and make guesses (if nothing else). Also you may find that your answer to one of the questions that you didn't know could be answered in a question down the line.
2) Think backwards: If many answers will potentially work read the question and eliminate the wrong ones in your mind first, that will increase your odds of getting the right answer.
3) Study as much broad materials as you can get your hands on. Everything from Warhol, to Stalin, to Sputnik. It's OK to study specific things but make sure you also have a broad understanding too.
4) Since you are taking the equivalent to a final exam without taking the class try to get the same book you local college uses and when you are done - sell it used. Better yet, find a friend who has already taken the course and borrow their book / tests. It is the cheap / smart way to study!
If you pass this test - American Government will be easier to study for if you do it 'back to back' as some of the info - court cases etc.. are the same. If you have taken US History I & II, then American Gov't will be an easy test to follow up with.
I studied REA literally up until the last minute and watched an 'Edumedia' DVD series of US History 1877 - to pres. phpCart by WEBMASTERS.COM (I will be selling this DVD series used on Ebay very shortly along with my study guide w/ its CD practice tests)
I am now studying for American Government which I am taking on May 1st. Wish me luck and I'll give you my report afterward, but I can already tell you that some of the test info is the same.
Best of luck to everyone in your studies!
