Portfolio Assessments, hard?
#1
Has anyone done a portfolio assessment at UMPI? And how hard was it?

I'm thinking on taking the Enrolled Agent exam, but since it's not covered by ACE credits, do you think I could get some credits via portfolio assessment? It's pretty tough exam so it should be worth something IMO...

Quote:The final option is the portfolio assessment. Please note that the portfolio assessment option is only available upon request and program approval if all other testing options are unavailable.   This option, while a great way to demonstrate proficiency, is labor- intensive and must be completed according to these guidelines.

Please note that there is a substantially large narrative section (approximately 3-5 pages per credit hour) that must be completed in order to receive credit for your portfolio.

From what ss20ts has said previously, they expect like 10-15 pages (or something ridiculous) for a PLA assessment. It's faster and easier to just do the papers for the UMPI classes.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

If you know the material it's not too hard. The difficult part is having the evidence to support the classes you want an assessment on. I think if you can support with Edx or other certificates along with a detailed paper you might be ok. I would also research the school to be sure they are likely to support you in this endeavor.

So far, the only credit source I have found for the Enrolled Agent exam is Thomas Nelson Community College, which appears to award 6 hours of 200-level accounting credit. Not sure how that would transfer to UMPI, not sure what you would have to do at TNCC to get it transcripted, etc. But, here’s the link:

If you are planning to get an advanced degree in accounting/taxation, you could also consider taking some classes in this master’s program and then transferring classes “down” to UMPI. Again, not sure how they would transfer, what requirements they would meet, etc, but here you go:

Master of Accountancy (taxation concentration), University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, in progress.
Master of Business Administration (financial planning specialization), University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, in progress.

BA, UMPI.  Accounting major; Business Administration major/Management & Leadership concentration.  Awarded Dec. 2021.

In-person/B&M: BA (history, archaeology)
In-person/B&M: MA (American history)

Sophia: 15 courses (42hrs)

EA here. For me, taxation class was very easy - I bet it is much easier than PLA you'll be asked to do. Just take that class at UMPI: if you are ready to take EA exam, the UMPI class won't take more than couple of days to finish.

I asked about completing PLAs at UMPI and was told to take the YourPace classes instead because they're faster and require less work. I would have had to write multiple papers and document my experience in the subject including letters from a manager. It would be faster to complete the tax accounting classes than to complete a PLA. You also need approval for the PLA.
